I know, I know, I missed last week. Life happens, what can I
say.
This week’s flashback Friday is a personal one. It’s about
an old friend of mine. I don’t know why exactly but she’s been on my mind the
last couple of weeks.
Her name was Aletha Leeuw. We just called her Lee. She was a
little over 6 feet tall, thin, long blonde hair and a kind of crooked smile.
She was an attention whore. (I absolutely don’t mean that in a bad way) I loved
hanging out with her because she was an attention whore. Lee was like a party
unto herself! She was “all in” 100% of the time. Whenever I see the saying, “live
out loud”, I think of Lee. She had the best sense of humor. And she was super
smart…she just didn’t want people to know that about her. She was an only child
– which kind of explains the attention whore thing. She had a joyful spirit! She
wasn’t ho hum about anything.
Once, when we were out at some club, she told people that I
was Patty Hearst, incognito and trying to have some kind of normal life and she
was a special agent assigned by the court to ‘keep an eye’ on me. Too funny!
Also, she introduced me to my husband. She was sure about us
and she didn’t waste any time trying to get us together when we both became
available. J
On our wedding day, she said she felt like she had earned a special place in
heaven because she introduced us and we fell in love. Cute, huh? I loved her.
She died from injuries she got in a car accident, in July of
’93. She was only 32. Oh, I’m not feeling melancholy or anything. I guess I was
just wondering what she’d be like now. Where she would be living. If she would
be married or if she would’ve had kids. I know she’s been gone a long time but
I still think about her, mostly because she was so special and different from
anyone I’ve ever known. I’m glad to have known her.
