internet animals

Oh yeah, I get sucked into those animal videos on the internet alllll the time! They're fantastic! You know why? Because without them, we would never know how intelligent animals really are. That they have feelings. Sometimes it's just astounding. Take for instance, the video of the water buffalo turning over a tortoise that was on his back. Or the giraffe that that took the tree limb off the antelope's antlers. Or the videos of birds actually playing. Elephants ganging up together to help a baby elephant out of a hole. Humans think they are the only creatures on earth that can feel empathy. People all over the world, thanks to smart phones and the internet have shown us differently. Humpback whales have shown us hundreds of times that they can and will protect seals, dolphins and other marine mammals from Orcas. What about the big brown bear that saved a crow from drowning? Or the orangutan that carefully guided a struggling bird, to the shore. And the countless videos of dogs showing empathy towards every kind of animal you can imagine. Even cats, known for being self centered, are sweet and caring. It's an amazing world out there!

Great sorrow

Today we said goodbye to our beloved 16 year old miniature schnauzer, Greta.
Greta, the bestest girl evah.
Greta with the sweet, loyal, loving soul. There are so many things I want to say about her.

She weighed 2.8 pounds when we brought her home at 7 weeks. She was about the size of a beanie baby! Seriously, how cute is this?!?!?!

I can't believe that was in April of 2004. We've had Greta for 1/2 of our married lives together! Whoa. That's a long time!
She was 5 months old when she got her first haircut. When I picked her up, I was so startled that I laughed out loud! Are you sure this is MY dog?? This is her before and after picture;

When she was a puppy, we had this little plushy squirrel for her that she loved. She killed 4 of them before we had to move on to a larger plushy! Her second favorite toy was a rubber squeaky burger. Squeaky toys were the best. She knew the names of her toys too. We didn't really make an effort to teach her those either. But she always knew the difference between "get the burger" and "get the ball."
When she was a 'teen' we kept her gated in the kitchen/dinning room. She ate a corner of one wall and tore up the vinyl flooring in another corner. Man she was busy! She chewed up any book I left out but she never ate our shoes. Oh, well...there was her love of slippers 😂
I walked her every single day, no matter the weather, to teach her good manners so she would be an awesome dog. And she was! She was a quick learner too. But every once in awhile she would rebel. She would pull on the leash, bark at everything, stop at every post and light pole and sometimes just walk into someone's yard and lay down! Such a character!!
Once we were walking and this strange cat crossed the street to come say hi to us. Greta usually barked her head off at cats (for no reason). But she didn't that time. The cat walked a blocked with us, right next to Greta, before it left. We found out later that it was a deaf cat. Greta was smart, eh!?
She knew all the right commands pretty early too. Sit, down, and twirl :-). She loved tug of war and scrunched up balls of paper. Christmas was a lot fun!!
One of our favorite games was hide and seek. I would hide some place in the house and my fella would say, "where's da mama?" It was harder to make it challenging after a couple years though, she knew all my hiding spots!
She loved to sleep under the covers, right behind my knees.
She was completely food driven. You could get her to do almost anything for a treat. We weren't big on people food, just here and there, but she had her favorites. The milk in the bottom of the cereal bowl, peanut butter, pizza crust and Dairy Queen.
She knew when I said, "love da mama" that I wanted a cuddle and she would jump on my chest and lay down. Super cute. After my fella retired, she liked to lay by him all the time.
She wasn't a digger but she sure was athletic in her youth! She never did catch that bunny though. And until she got much older, she didn't mind the snow. She always hated the rain but the snow was ok.

She didn't love Pepper when we brought her home. But it turned out that she really grew to care about her. After Pepper died, she lost her appetite. She lost her interest in walks or playing or hanging out outside. That grief coupled with her age and failing physical abilities, was pretty hard on us. Heartbreaking as a matter of fact.
We really struggled with what the right thing to do for her was. We wanted to keep her with us. For as long as we could I guess. But that's not always the best thing for you pet, is it. She was struggling to eat, struggling to drink, struggling to stay on her feet. Because she was deaf and mostly blind, everything startled her.
Greta loved us all unconditionally. There were moments when that unconditional love just made my whole day worthwhile. The love of a dog is a gift.
It's so hard to imagine our home without her. I know it's been awhile since we've seen her sitting at the window waiting for us to get home, but I'm still going to miss that.

I'm going to miss her toasty hot little body next to me when I was chilled. I'm going to miss her twirl for a treat; She always had grand expectations. That's a good way to live your life.
Her absence will be profound.
She was the bestest girl evah!

                           totally bribed them for this shot

"dad! is that for us!?!?"

                       She actually did pose for pictures
                but she didn't like all the pictures 😜

                                   Yep, another bribe 😊

                        One day when I came out of the bathroom, there she was, waiting....😂

Greta and Pepper had wonderful lives and ours will be changed forever without them.

Dogs are cool and so is Purdue

Purdue taking part in life-long study of dogs health
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WTHR) — Researchers are looking for America's oldest dog.
They don't want to teach him new tricks, but they are hoping he could teach them a few things.
And your dog could be part of their life-long scientific study that's looking to learn from pets nationwide.
More than 40 scientists and researchers from across the United States – including one from Purdue University – are looking for dogs to participate the national study of the general health and wellness of dogs.
The Dog Aging Project will be looking at dogs of all breeds and mixes from across the nation. This is the first major longitudinal study involving dogs, and it's scheduled to last at least 10 years.
“We are going to look at a lot of different aspects of dog’s lives that affect their health and longevity,” says Audrey Ruple, a veterinary epidemiologist at Purdue.
“Dogs are good models for humans,” she says. “They have similar genetics, share our environment, and they also have similar diseases and health issues. We will be asking, ‘How do dogs age healthfully?’ in order to help better understand how we can age healthfully, too.”
Dogs of all age ranges, breeds and sizes are eligible to participate in the study. Owners go online to register their dogs, then create a personal profile to track health, home life, diet, environment and lifestyle.
Dogs will need to make regular veterinarian visits every year. If a dog is assigned to a specific group, the owners may get a kit for their veterinarian to collect blood, urine or other samples during the annual visit.
Participation is voluntary and there is no cost to participate.
“It’s important to get dogs from all parts of the U.S. because of the different environmental factors present,” Ruple said. “And we’re trying to find the oldest dog in America, as well.”
All dogs registered will be eligible to participate in various studies. The group conducted a soft launch with 4,500 dogs registered earlier this fall. Recently, the researchers reached 75,000 dogs for the study.
“Our study population just keeps growing and growing and growing,” Ruple said.
Researchers hope to find out more details on how genetics, demographics and environmental factors such as chemical exposures and noise pollution impact health and longevity.
Ruple says one goal of the study is to not just improve the health and longevity of dogs, but also extend those findings to improve human health. “By studying aging in dogs, we hope to learn how to better match human health span to life span so that we can all live longer, healthier lives,” Ruple said.
Funding for the Dog Aging Project comes from the National Institute of Aging, a part of the National Institutes of Health, as well as from private donations.

Woof!!

The Westminster Dog Show starts tonight! We love this annual tradition. We love dogs. This past year, the AKC recognized 3 new breeds. The Azawakh, which will be shown this year;

and the Barbet and the Dogo Argentio. We won't get to see them in the ring until next year though.

I'm already a fan of the Barbet. What's not to love about something so fluffy!!!

This year, the favorite to win is a Whippet named Bourbon;

Great sadness

Today we said goodbye to our sweet 12 year old Miniature Schnauzer, Pepper.

Pepper was the sweetest spirit, full of joy and enthusiasm. Ready to play at a moment’s notice. She jumped around the backyard like a baby goat, stalked squirrels like a cat, squeaked when she yawned and snorted like pig when she ate. She was incredibly smart, learning a new behavior in just a few days! She LOVED carrots and pineapple and pizza crust. Oh who am I kidding, she loved almost any kind of food! But she had nice doggie manners when you gave her a treat and she always chewed her food. Everyday when I came home from work, she howled and stuck her butt up in the air. I’m sure gonna miss that. She was a great watch dog. Alerting us to squirrels, bunnies, the trash truck, neighbors and Amazon delivery drivers. I hardly ever heard her growl though, only when we played tug. She stole alllll the toys from Greta and I’m pretty sure that she believed all the dogs beds belonged to her too! She slept in the craziest positions. Her little clownish, furry self made us laugh almost every day! She was so brave and so bashful at the same time. She didn't like to have her picture taken. Every time I would point the camera at her she would turn her head away - no, don't look at me. She was a great hunter, of anything that moved. Always finding that bug right before it got to me :-) She loved Greta A LOT! She was 100% dog. If we had nice weather all year, she would’ve been perfectly happy to spend her days outside, running in occasionally to make sure we were still here. She wasn't a cuddly dog but she loved us completely and we felt the same about her.

...her little body gave out. She died in my arms and I felt honored to have been holding her in her last moments, with my fella by my side. It felt right. Sigh.
Dogs are the greatest gift, loving unconditionally. Our home won’t be the same without her.

talking dogs

Wouldn't that be funny?!
The other day my fella said, I wish the dogs could talk. I started thinking about what they would say! Mostly, I think they would be so annoying;
When are we gonna eat
can I have a cookie
you stink
hey look! a squirrel
what's that smell
breakfast? I'm hungry!
did you see that bird I almost caught?!
Greta ate the kleenex
where did that squirrel go
can I have something to eat
can you smell that?!
do you wanna play ball
here's the ball
what's that smell?
can I have some of that?
wanna play?
I'm sleepy
I dreamed I caught a squirrel
I ate it
I'm hungry, can I have a cookie?
what's that smell
where's da mama
you smell
is it time to eat
.....
I think that's pretty much how it would go, non-stop, the whole time they were awake!! Sometimes it would be ok, like when I know they don't feel well. But for the most part, nope, I don't wish they could talk!!

Pets

I saw this story a couple months ago about a pet store burglary. The thieves stole $44,000. worth of puppies!!! That's like the whole store, right?? Nope. They stole FIVE dogs. I can do that math. That's over 8 thousand dollars per dog. It turned out that they were Bulldogs. Who cares. Why in the hell does ANY dog cost 8 thousand dollars???!!!! I just don't get it. Why is a pure bred dog so expensive? And why are "designer" dogs so expensive?? They're just mutts! Why is it so expensive to own a dog these days? When I was a kid, your dog got a rabies shot and that was it. And you fed them all sorts of crap. Nobody got their dogs teeth cleaned. Nobody gave their dogs heart-worm protection. Maybe dogs live longer now because of those things, but still. $300 to have their teeth cleaned? But I digress... over 8 thousand dollars for a dog??? A Bulldog???? I mean, Bulldogs are cute and all but they come with a ton of health problems right off the bat! Geeshh. Us humans sure love our furry friends don't we? But to pay that kind of money for  for a pet just seems so wrong. Our next dog is coming from the pound. I want to love a dog that someone else didn't. Come on people, stop paying so much for love!

woof woof...what?

Poor Greta. She's almost deaf now. When she was a puppy and I was teaching her things - sit, down, come, etc. - I always did it accompanied by a hand signal. I'm not sure why, but I did. It turns out that that was a really good idea! Now, even though she can't hear me, unless I YELL, I can signal her and she'll still do what I want her too! Pretty cool.

Having a deaf dog presents other challenges as well. Like, you have to be extra careful with open doors. If she runs outside, she won't hear you tell her to stop. I was thinking about adding a tag to her collar that says "I'm deaf." And her voice has changed. When I get home from work, her usual "OMG you're home" bark has turned into this weird sort of yodel. Before she lost her hearing, even if you tried, you couldn't sneak up on her. Now, you have to be careful not to startle her when you come from behind. That's a little weird. She used to wag her little nub like crazy when you laughed! But she still knows that a smile is a happy thing, so she wags if she sees you smile at her. Also, she panics a little if she can't find you, so you have to be sure she knows if you leave the house. And, while she can still hear a little bit, we yell when we say, "good girl" and give her a thumbs up. I'm hoping that she'll catch on to that pretty quickly - so she'll know that we still think she's a good girl, when we give her a thumbs up :-)

I was wondering if that stresses her out, that she can't hear. I asked the vet and she said she's never known a dog to exhibit signs of stress because they were deaf. That it usually happens so gradually, they don't really notice. I don't know. I think she notices. My fella says she's perfect on the leash now. Not that she wasn't good before, she was! But now she doesn't pull, ever! I don't know if it's because she's getting old or if it's because she can't hear so she sticks close to him to feel safe. I think she sleeps more now. But again, I don't know if it's because she's getting old or if it's because she's not on guard all the time now, because she can't hear.

It's a little sad.

silly things

yesterday morning, when I opened the door of the bathroom, this is what I saw;
She was just sitting there, waiting for me to come out and play. Silly girl :-)

I never really cared that much for beets. They were always just ok for me. I wanted to like them because they're a "super" food. Like blueberries. Which I also don't care for. Anyway, one night we went to dinner at this little place called Hollyhock Hill - best fried chicken dinner in the state, look it up! They serve beets on a relish tray. OMG they were soooo good!!! A couple weeks ago I found these in Costco;
I could eat this whole jar in one sitting they're so good! I'm gonna need more. A LOT more!

Next up, what the hell are all these little holes in my yard???? There are 100's of them! At first I though they might be from cicadas, but they're not. Somebody told me that they look like yellow jackets holes?! Does that mean there are hundreds of them in my yard???

Last, look how pretty this is;
I cut all these veggies up, every Sunday. I fill 7 containers full and I eat one every single day for lunch.  And I've been doing that for about 8 weeks. You would think I would be sick and tired of them! I'm not though. Sometimes, if I have extra, I eat a bowl for dinner too! I crave them! Of course, it's better than craving chips, but still, every day? My fella is starting to wonder about my eating habits!

Stinky

Pepper is so stinky. I swear, she had toxic farts this weekend! I was almost going to call the Vet today because I thought certainly there must be something wrong with her!! Then, last night, she jumped up on the couch and when I looked at her, she had this hanging in her whiskers;

It's the wing off of a Cicada. Which means of course, she's eating them! In case you don't know what a Cicada is;

We have an abundance of them this year. Apparently, they are very tasty if you happen to be a dog.

No wonder her farts are so stinky! Ick.

Celebrations!

June is a super busy celebration month!

There's the daughter's birthday
The mama's birthday
Father's Day
My wedding anniversary
and one more thing I'm forgetting right now.

Last Sunday, we took Mom to dinner for her birthday and our anniversary. We went to a place called St. Elmo's. OMG! I can't even believe that you can make meat taste that good! We all had filet mignon and honestly, it was SO tender you could almost cut it with a fork! It was heavenly!

On her actual birthday, we're going to drive up to South Bend and visit Notre Dame University. She said she's always wanted to see it and I am all about making dreams come true! I should've been Santa! Aaaaand, there's a chocolate factory in South Bend that you can take a tour of! Don't be silly, of course we're going to to go that too! Not Bill though...he's going to spend the day at Mom's babysitting the dogs and doing some projects Mom has for him :-) He's so great about that!

Oh! And Saturday is the annual 1/2 Price Books sale! 7 states are participating and
nothing is over $2.00!!! It's the best thing ever! Movies, music and books!! You can never have too many books. Also on Saturday, there is a mega pet adoption event - all dogs and cats, $30. Over a 1000 of them! I feel like I need to go...but I won't. I really was going to...then I looked it up and saw an article in the paper from last years event and it said they "ran out of dogs" on the first day. They adopted out over 600 hundred dogs! That made me feel really good. Besides, I have my eye on a fella at our local shelter. I'm trying to get Bill to warm up to the idea. He loves the dog but he is already 10 years old. I don't care. He's so stinkin' cute!
I want to love him!!

Poor Greta

Poor Greta. Greta is 11 years already. She's the sweetest dog EVER! She's super smart too. And nothing bothers her. Seriously. You can drop things on her, push her off the bed with your feet, cover her up with a blanket, anything and she just rolls with it. I wouldn't have guessed that anything could actually traumatize her! Boy was I wrong.

One day last month, Bill came home from work and she was nowhere to be seen. Of course he panicked!! His first thought was, "OMG, I left her outside at lunch!" It was freezing cold that day. So he hurries out back and calls her...nothing..."Shit, she's dead!" He walked all around the yard...no Greta. He back in the house, "Gretaaaaa, wanna treat??" Nothing. Finally, he looks at Pepper and says, "Pepper, where's Greta??" Pepper ran straight out to the sun-room. So Bill is out there calling her and still nothing. Then he notices that Pepper is over toward the corner of the sun-room. Sure enough, there's Greta, under the workbench, behind a couple cinder blocks, shaking like a leaf. Bill had to pull her out of the corner.

When he finally goes back into the house with her, he sits down and tries to soothe her and that's when he heard it...a small high pitched, little beep. Huh? Every couple of minutes. After another 10 minutes, he figures out that the battery in the CO2 detector is dying and it's beeping to remind us. THAT'S what traumatized her??? Yep.

Now, anytime she hears a little high pitched beep, she starts vibrating! Oy. Poor Greta. You would be surprised at all the things that beep! Last night I had to mute the TV because there was a scene with someone in the hospital and when they flat-lined and the heart monitor started beeping, Greta went over the edge!!

I hope she gets over it!!

Must love dogs!

Some of the timing on these pictures is fantastic!
Prepare to smile :-)
