Once in a Blue Moon

In case you didn't know, tomorrow is a blue moon. And in case you don't know what a blue moon is, besides a yummy wheat beer, it's the 2nd full moon in a month. The next one won't be until August of 2012. Oh! I guess I'll have a Blue Moon beer with dinner tomorrow! hahahahahahaha. Sometimes I crack myself up!! Mom and Bill and I are going out to dinner, early, then home.

Friday, I think we're going to the car show. It's something to do and he plays along with my stuff :-)

The year is winding down...

Where did it go? In a blink of an eye and poof, it's the past.

Hope you all had a very merry Christmas! Even though it was just the 3 of us, we had tons of fun. My brother got us a motorcycle ornament ~ LIME GREEN!!! Isn't that the best?! And syrup! Not just any syrup...Knotts Berry Farm Boysenberry syrup. MMMMMMMMM. My sweet man made us pancakes for breakfast Saturday so we could have syrup. Awwwww.
I really like having a small budget for gifts. You have to be so much more creative and thoughtful about what you give.

We watched a lot of movies over the week;
Star Trek, A
Julie and Julia, B
Harry Potter, B
Night at the Museum 2, C
Bride Wars, D
and Fools Gold...again. I like that one for fun and fluff.

It was a quick 6 days for me and a long 9 days for the man. He said he was ready to go back to work to have something to do. Yeah, not even going there!

And we got our eyes checked. Bill said his distance vision has been bothering him. Well, he used to have 20/10 eyesight. Now he has 20/15 and 20/20. Boo hoo. Well, I guess that's not very nice. That is a big change. But compared to me, he's still seeing better than average. I got to hear the OD tell me I have Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts, which of course aren't the normal getting old kind. Grrrrrrrr. That bummed me out. I think I would like to hang up my "I want to be different" hat now.

In a few short days, not only will the year be in the past but so will the decade. I've been looking at all the "decade in review" articles. It's hard to believe that so much has happened in the last 10 years.

Christmas trivia

In 1752, 11 days days were dropped from the year when the switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar was made. The December 25 date was effectively moved 11 days backwards. Some Christian church sects called old calendarists, still celebrate Christmas on January 7 (previously December 25 of the Julian calendar).

Alabama was the first state to recognize Christmas as an official holiday. This tradition began in 1836.

Electric Christmas tree lights were first used in 1895. The idea for using electric Christmas lights came from an American, Ralph E. Morris. The new lights proved safer than the traditional candles. (ya think?!)

Clearing up a common misconception, in Greek, Xristos means Christ. That is where the word "X-Mass" comes from. Not because some one took the Christ out of Christmas.

A traditional Christmas dinner in early England was the head of a pig prepared with mustard.

During the Christmas buying season, Visa cards alone are used an average of 5340 times every minute in the US.

Christmas caroling began as an old English custom called Wassailing - toasting neighbors to a long and healthy life.

hahahahahahehehehehehe

have a holly jolly Christmas...

I like that song. Oh who am I kidding, I like ALL the Christmas songs! It's the only thing I've listened to for weeks! I love all the lights and sparkle too. This year I've seen a couple of these;

I think it's a very clever idea...next year. :-)

And really, we need an inflatable biker Santa for the yard. Seriously.

Also, Dear Santa, bring more snow! This mornings weather forecast said rain on Christmas day. Phooey.

Bill started vacation on Saturday ~ 9 days off. He's pretty happy. He was going to be lonely too, so I'm taking Tue and Wed as vacation days. I get Thu and Fri off so I'll have 6 days off! I'm pretty happy too

Today I have on a necklace that has tiny little Christmas lights on it, that actually blink! Woohoo! (thanks Mom) It's so fun and I'm spreading the joy like crazy!!!

Do you noitce

how much the products you buy, change? Take for instance any canned soft drink. You actually have to hold them loosely now or you will crush the can. It used to be a much bigger deal to do that. Yet, it costs a whole lot more now. Now you have to buy the "double" roll of TP so it will last longer than a couple days. Stuff like that irritates me. Yup, gettin' old. I haven't even heard of 90% of the bands/groups that have tickets for sale on Ticketmaster or Live Nation. I'm okay with that though. It's just funny to me.

The story of Rudolph...

Because he's my favorite :-)

Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer

The Chicago-based Montgomery Ward company, department store operators, had been purchasing and distributing children's coloring books as Christmas gifts for their customers for several years. In 1939, Montgomery Ward tapped one of their own employees to create a book for them, thus saving money. 34-year old copywriter Robert L. May wrote the story of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer in 1939, and 2.4 million copies were handed out that year. Despite the wartime paper shortage, over 6 million copies had been distributed by 1946.

May drew in part on the story "The Ugly Duckling" and in part from his own experiences as an often taunted, small, frail youth to create the story of the misfit reindeer. Though Rollo and Reginald were considered, May settled on Rudolph as his reindeer's name.

Writing in verse as a series of rhyming couplets, May tested the story as he went along on his 4-year old daughter Barbara, who loved the story.

Sadly, Robert Mays wife died around the time he was creating Rudolph, leaving Mays deeply in debt due to medical bills. However, he was able to persuade Sewell Avery, Montgomery Ward's corporate president, to turn the copyright over to him in January 1947, thus ensuring May's financial security.

May's story "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was printed commercially in 1947 and in 1948 a nine-minute cartoon of the story was shown in theaters. When May's brother-in-law, songwriter Johnny Marks, wrote the lyrics and melody for the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", the Rudolph phenomenon was born. Turned down by many musical artists afraid to contend with the legend of Santa Claus, the song was recorded by Gene Autry in 1949 at the urging of Autry's wife. The song sold two million copies that year, going on to become one of the best-selling songs of all time, second only to Bing Crosby's "White Christmas". The 1964 television special about Rudolph, narrated by Burl Ives, remains a holiday favorite to this day and Rudolph himself has become a much-loved Christmas icon.

Movies...

I had a lot of wrapping to do for all the out of town family so over the weekend I watched all the Santa Clause movies. I love those. The first one was the best though. Then I watched UP, the Disney/Pixar movie. Fantastic animation. It was a sweet story too. I also watched a movie called The Women, with Meg Ryan and Annette Benning. Parts of it were okay, but it was dumb. I'm tired of dumb movies about women. Julia and Julie are on my list this week. I think Meryl Streep can do just about anything! Oh, and Rudolph and It's a Wonderful Life and Christmas Vacation and the musical version of Scrooge with Albert Finney. Woohoo!!

I almost forgot...

Happy birthday Indiana!!! Our home state is 193 years old today.

Only 14 more days

I'm still hoping for more snow. Not like some parts of the Midwest got, but more than just an inch or 2. This week has mostly been plain ol cold. In the teens. It's so refreshing! hehehehe

Tomorrow night we're going to the Miniature House Museum. They're having a special tour. It's just something to do. Other than that, I have to finish up the gifts for the Utah and California people, so I can get them shipped off. Yeah, yeah, tic toc tic toc. I know. But I'm planning on nice weekend filled with Christmas shows, chores and music.

You're never too old to learn

At least that's what I've heard.

We'll see...

One night last week we were eating at our local Chinese food buffet, where we noticed that most of the wait staff is now Mexican. This lead to some other conversation that ended with my other 1/2 saying, "I always wanted to learn Spanish". My reply was, "Me too!" So we decided that it's never too late and we're going to learn Spanish. And since I work for the state, I'll have lots of opportunity to practice :-) hahahahahahahaha

Usted puede enseñar a un perro viejo nuevos trucos.
Vamos a aprender algo más que las malas palabras!

Sure, they LOOK cute...

But they aren't. Both of them, little rascals...

I KNOW I didn't leave these out, within reach. Which means that one of them (Pepper), with the complete support of the other (Greta), found a way to get up on the dinning room table and pulled this bag of Kisses to the floor where they both spent a few heavenly moments chowing down.

Foil and all. Bill said they were in a good mood when he got home...sure, they're all amped up on sugar! Well, they'll have very sparkly poo for a couple days, but at least they have nice breath.
Good grief.

LETS CELEBRATE!!!

Lists are so subjective....

In the latest list of 100 books you should read, I've only finished 35 of them. Most of them I didn't care for. Like Catcher in the Rye. I didn't get it. And The Grapes of Wrath was sooooo long.
Some of them were required reading in school and some of them I read after seeing the movie ~ the books are always better :-) I'm also willing to admit that of the ones I haven't read, I have no intention of getting to at least 1/2 of them.

A long long time ago...

No really....a long, long time ago, when I was in high school there were several fun jewelry trends. One was anything turquoise. Way back then you could get a super cool ring for $5. ~sigh~ The other one was puzzle rings. Especially these

Usually you got 12 bands. Sometimes though, you could find one with 24! I loved these.

The other kind of puzzle ring looked like this

This one was harder to figure out. I had an Uncle in the Navy that sent me a two tone one when I was in my early 20's. I wore it on my thumb up until just a couple years ago, when it broke. I was going to have it fixed but then I lost one of the rings. Phooey.

Anyway...I've been wanting to replace it but then I got to thinking about that other kind and wondered how come you never see those in a store or gift/craft show? So I Googled it. I found a lot of the 2nd kind. Then I checked Ebay. Eureka!! You can really find anything on the www. I'm continually amazed. Oh yeah...so I bought it, the one with 24 bands!!! I'm so excited. I can't wear it on my thumb but it will be so fun to have, in a nostalgic sort of way.

It was less than a pair of shoes, which is usually what I buy when I'm angry with my man. He got off cheap this time. Remember ~ happy wife, happy life.

Bye bye turkey

How was your holiday weekend? I'm pretty much turkeyed out now. We finished the last of the leftovers yesterday and I froze the rest of the turkey. It will make delicious soup in a couple weeks.

I spent the rest of the weekend cleaning, putting regular things away and replacing them with Christmas things. Both trees are up now and decorated. I decided to go with a theme for the tree in the sun room. Motorcycles :-) Believe it or not, there are lots of motorcycle Santa ornaments out there. There are a lot of plain old motorcycle ornaments period. It's kind of cool! In a couple years I bet I'll have plenty. For now though, I filled in the blank spots with silver balls. It's nice to have a sun room to decorate. I put all the winter/Christmas stuffed animals out there too. I know if I put them inside, that rascally Pepper will claim them for her toys.

And in case you need MORE to celebrate, here is the list of National 'days' for December;

December 1 National Pie Day

Thanksgiving 2009

Welcome once again to my annual “I’m thankful for” list. Can you believe this is the 11th year I’ve done this? I’m happy to say that my distribution list grows longer every year.

There are so many things to be thankful for every day, that sometimes it’s hard to just pick out some of them. I’ve done my best though.

How about you? Do you have a list? If you don’t, this year I want you to think of 11 things that you’re thankful for. Imagine, if everyone did that, the world would be a much happier place, don’t you think? Remember, blessings and thank yous are free!

Here is my list of 11;

1. I’m super duper thankful that my Mom celebrated her 1 year anniversary being cancer free!

2. I’m so thankful for all the family and friends who traveled to Las Vegas last January to help me celebrate turning 50! Now that was big fun!

3. I’m thankful to have celebrated 2 decades of wedded bliss last June. Even the not so blissful moments are okay.

4. I’m thankful for my new sister-in-law and that my baby brother finally found his own wedded bliss. Love rocks!

5. I’m thankful that I can find something to laugh at every single day.

6. In my corner of the world I’m thankful that we are content and that we have everything we need and lots of things we don’t. It’s a nice feeling.

7. I’m thankful for live entertainment. I love concerts and plays. I love them combined too! (that makes it a musical)

8. I’m also thankful that the whole family consists of a bunch of NON-smokers. It’s the greatest thing!

9. I’m thankful that I am loved, especially on my worst days when my head is full of snarky comments.

10. Everyone in our family did some traveling this year and everyone made it back home, so I’m thankful that God keeps us safe.

11. And last but not least, I’m thankful for Vanilla Coke Zero, chive fries w/ranch dressing, Autumn leaves, sunny days, fuzzy slippers on chilly mornings, my MP3 player, Jelly Belly’s, email jokes, Chef Boyardee Ravioli, our jobs, Costco, 2 silly dogs, Hershey’s candy cane kisses, books, 24/7 Christmas music on 107.9, and each of you, all of who contribute to the happiness to my life.

I hope you all have a fantastic Thanksgiving!

Bee thankful, life is full of joy

Love,
Cynthia

I love musicals

Oh I know, some of you probably feel like my husband and say, "musicals make me barf"
But I love musicals...all that singing and dancing. :-)

Yesterday, Chuck's daughter and I went to see Chicago. It was fantastic! We were in the FRONT row, smack in the middle!!! (The only other show I ever got to sit in the front row for was Liberace, and I was only 12/13 years old.) It was pretty cool. We liked the gal that played Roxie better than Rene Zellweger. What a delightful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Other than that, we did a lot house chores in preparation for Thanksgiving. Oh, and put up the Christmas lights. Woohoo! The weather has been awesome. I like it but in a couple more weeks I'm gonna want some snow.

Another head scratcher

Study to decide if caged chickens are happy
Associated Press
Posted: November 19, 2009

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Are cramped chickens crazy chickens?

"Researchers are trying to answer that question through several studies that intend to take emotions out of an angry debate between animal welfare groups and producers.

Peter Skewes, a Clemson University researcher, is leading one of the studies comparing how different housing affects egg-laying hens. Skewes will compare emotional and behavioral patterns of caged hens with non-caged counterparts. Part of that will including studying behaviors such as wing-stretching, perching and foraging.

"We're looking at what ... things they would still do if given the opportunity," Skewes said. "So you deprive them of that, and the welfare component is, so what? There are difficult questions.""

Seriously? Good grief.

I love weather

I love all kinds of weather. I love it when it's snowing (from the comfort of my home), I love a really good thunder storm and I love big white fluffy clouds in a beautiful blue sky. But one of my favorite 'looking' weather things is when 1/2 of the world is sunny and the other 1/2 is dark and foreboding. You know, when a storm is coming in and you can see it? I think that's so cool. This morning, driving to work, in my rear view mirror I could see the sunrise, but straight ahead of solid dark gray. I can hear my husband saying, "honey, you need therapy"

Holiday Mail for Heroes

"Holiday Mail For Heroes is here again!

This year, we are teaming up with our friends at Pitney Bowes for the third time to send holiday cards to service members, veterans, and their families. This is a great way to give back this holiday season - by sharing your kind words and thanks with those who have given a great deal to their country.

We will begin accepting cards on November 2nd. Send in your cards to the address below, and please read the guidelines carefully! (click on the link)

Holiday Mail For Heroes
P.O. Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

All cards must be postmarked no later than Monday, December 7th. Cards postmarked after this date will unfortunately be returned to the sender. This deadline ensures enough time to sort and distribute cards before the holidays.

After the mailbox closes, the cards we received will be screened for hazardous materials by Pitney Bowes and then reviewed by Red Cross volunteers working around the country. Then, the cards are sent out to recipients in time for the holidays."

Prime raking weather

Here it is November and it was 72 yesterday! It was a beautiful weekend. It was fun yesterday seeing the whole neighborhood out doing their last bit of yard work and raking up their leaves.
We even got a nice treat...one of our neighbors, who hires someone to do her leaves, had them do our side yard along with hers! That was super nice!!! So we finished up the season this year with 86 bags. We haven't done the backyard though. I'm okay with that for now.

Saturday night we went to the Indpls. Symphony Orchestra to hear Mozart's last symphony, Jupiter. Bill is on a classical music kick right now and I got tickets for $3!!! It was a delightful night out for 3 bucks. We even enjoyed walking around downtown afterwards. I love live entertainment.

And I sweet talked him into getting a 2nd Christmas tree! Woohoo! You can never overdecorate for Christmas :-) Menard's had a 6 ft, pre-lit tree for $30. I'm going to put it in the sun room where we can see it! I know it's not even Thanksgiving yet, but I'm ready to start putting up the Christmas decor. I can hardly stop myself!!!

Bring on the snow!!

whew

Okay, I just had another one of those inappropriate at work fit of the giggles. Dangit!
That Cake Wrecks gal cracks me up!!!!! And right after that, there was The People of
WalMart. Man-o-man! What aren't they thinking when they leave their homes??? Whew. Now I have to go pee...

About your state

Do you know what your state motto is?

Indiana's state motto is, "the crossroads of America"

California's state motto is "Eureka! ...I have found it!"
I didn't know that. Really, I lived there for many years and never once thought to wonder what the state motto was. Now that I know, I don't care :-)

Arkansas' state motto is, "The People Rule". I like that one.

The state motto for Texas is, "Friendship".

The ACLU challenged, (and lost) Ohio because their state motto is, "With God, all things are possible"

Some states have very interesting motto's when you consider the "state" they are in...

New Hampshire "Live Free or Die"
Massachusetts "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty"
New Jersey "Liberty and Prosperity"
Pennsylvania "Virtue, Liberty, and Independence"
Delaware "Liberty and Independence"

Monday, November 2, 2009

It's November?

Did you remember to change your clocks? We didn't. Us Hoosiers are still trying to get used to doing that. I was more than a little ticked off Sunday morning when I realized that the dogs woke me up at 6:30...AM. I thought they were doing really well, waiting until 7:30 to tell me they had to pee. Yeah, I know...but it was the principle of the thing.

Halloween was a bust for us again this year. We had 1 group of 4 and 1 pack of 3. Whoopee. It bums me out a little. I really look forward to all those little cuties every year. (Hey Jen, talk about cuties. Way to go on the costumes!)

I didn't get one single thing accomplished over the weekend. Well, not really. I did a little shopping and raked up some leaves. That was pretty much it. Saturday was weird all day for me. For starters, Friday night we went to our favorite little Chinese Buffet and I had TWO soda's with dinner. I didn't go to bed until 4:00am. For the rest of the day, I napped off and on. Good grief. I knew better (smacking my forehead). I guess it's the rebel in me? Maybe it's just another one of those things that happens as you get older, that you would rather forget? I'll remember next time for sure! Then, Bill had to work all day. Yep, my Saturday was just a little off kilter. Oh! And I had the weirdest dream about wild animals in our backyard and some freaky alien mold stuff that could morph into the most bizarre looking creatures. Sometimes I'm a lot more creative than I think I am! I mean, the first thing it morphed into was this sheep shaped slug with eyes all over it! Ewwwww.

Before you know it, Thanksgiving will be here. Mmmmmmm. 4 days of over eating!

Candy Corn

One of my all time favorite sweets. I especially love the pumpkins :-) Mmmmmm, yummmy.

Did you know that today is National Candy Corn Day? Woohoo! I think I'll celebrate!

***************************************************************
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Candy corn is a confection popular in the United States and Canada, particularly around Halloween. Created in the 1880s by George Renninger of the Wunderle Candy Company, the three colors of the candy are meant to mimic corn. Each piece is approximately the size of a whole kernel of corn, as if it fell off a ripe or dried ear of corn. The candy is usually tri-colored with a yellow base, orange center, and white tip, although the color combinations may vary. The yellow, broader part is the top, while the white point is the bottom. The most common alternative color scheme, called "Indian corn", is white, orange, and brown, and is sometimes associated with the Thanksgiving holiday.

Sale
The National Confectioners Association estimate 20 million pounds of candy corn are sold each year. October 30 is National Candy Corn Day. Although regular candy corn is most popular at Halloween, it is available year-round.
According to Brach's Confections, Inc., the top branded retailer of candy corn, each year Americans eat enough Brach's candy corn that if the kernels were laid end to end, they would circle the Earth four times.

Production
Candy corn is made primarily from sugar, corn syrup and honey. Originally, candy corn was made by hand. Manufacturers first combined sugar, corn syrup, and water and cooked them into a slurry. Fondant was added for texture and marshmallows provided a soft bite. The final mixture was then heated and poured into shaped molds. Three passes were required during the pouring process, one for each colored section. Few changes were made to the process or recipe, and machines were quickly invented to perform the tasks formerly done by people.

Halloween

Some Halloween things are just funny as hell. I love this one...Zombie Candy Corn. hehehehahaha

And then there's the creative crowd...I think this first one is amazing, but this person should be sculpting with permanent materials, not pumpkins.

Remember when jack o lanterns looked like this?

Tic toc, tic toc,

Time goes by doesn't it?

Do you ever stop and think about your life, a year ago? And how much it's changed? When you're young, it seems like your life changes from day to day. But even as you get older things change all the time.

A year ago I became an ex-smoker. A year ago my brother was single, now he's blissfully attached to Denae. A year ago, Mom became a new dog owner. A year ago, I was trying to be happy for my man at his attempt to forgive his brother ~ now we say, what brother? A year ago, I was angry all the time, now, not so much ;-) A year ago, I just didn't get the whole MP3/iPod thing. Now, I love my MP3!! As a matter of fact, today I'm listening to Elton John, Billy Joel and Rod Stewart. My perception of things is different as well. I'm more cynical these days than I was a year ago. I trust people, in general, less than I used to.

But don't get me wrong...I'm also happier than I was a year ago. That comes with getting older too.

So much is different I don't even try to imagine what things will be like in another year!

On a lighter note, in case I didn't send this cartoon to you, here's one that was tailor made for ME!!
Boo bees...get it? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Influenza!

Whew. I'm SO glad to be feeling better. Wow did that suck! I actually took TWO sick days!! That's surprising for me. But, I've been sucking it up for 30 years and I just didn't feel like it this time. Maybe I'm just turning into a sissy as I get older? Oh, I know, how about "I'm getting wiser"!? That's more like it :-) Yeah, I like that.

Thanks to my Uncle for the following chuckles; (I needed these this morning)

fly off the handle...get it? hahahahahahahahaha

Ewwwwwwwwwww. I'll never be quite as happy eating candy corn again.

Don't forget!

Wasted days...

Phooey. Didn't get to go to the hockey game because I was sick all day. I don't think it was the flu though, but man do all the muscles in my stomach and sides hurt! Ick.

Yesterday was a better day. Whew. Late in the afternoon we bagged up another 12 bags of leaves...I'm keeping count this year, just out of curiosity (17 so far). Bill said he thinks I was exaggerating when I said 100+ bags last year. I do exaggerate sometimes but I'm fairly certain I'll be right this time :-) And of course he was grumbling about all the leaves! Me? Nope. I was saying things like, "I LOVE Autumn!" and, " I love the smell of the leaves and I love this chore! It's a classic Midwestern thing to do." and "I love the crisp air and I especially love it when it's windy and it looks like it raining leaves!" and, "I also love driving down a tree lined street when everything is dry and you can see all the leaves swirling behind you in your rear view mirror." He said I need therapy. Secretly though, I think it made him smile.

I didn't watch my movies either. I just slept a lot. Oh well.

Oh, I heard a funny thing this morning. Someone asked an older person how they were and they said "I'm still on the right side of the grass." It wasn't until I got to my desk that I realized what they meant, then I laughed out loud. I swear, sometimes I'm so slow!

Coming up...

HOCKEY! Nah, I'm not really that excited :-)

But we got tickets to the opening game tomorrow night for 5 bucks. That's a lot of entertainment for $5. Better than the movies. Aaaaand, we won the championship cup last year...bet you didn't know that did ya. Anyway, it'll bee fun.
.
I also have tickets to the musical, Chicago! I'm taking Chuck's daughter...she needs some fun :-) But that's not until November. It's always nice to have something on the calendar though.
.
Slumdog Millionaire is on HBO this weekend. I'll finally get to see it. And I have Marley and Me waiting on the DVR. I'm fairly certain I'll be able to watch them both, sans Bill, because he will be busy doing his obsessive thing and listening to music on Rhapsody. Really, in 2 days he's listened to pieces of over 800 tunes!!! Whoa.
.
Now if I could just get him to be obsessive about finishing the bathroom!!!!!!!! *sigh*

Garth Brooks says he's coming out of retirement

YIPPEE!!!!!!!

Blech

It's a gloomy, rainy, cold morning. I'm sleepy and for the life of me I don't know how I got to work! I hate it when that happens...you know, when you're just on auto pilot in the car and all of a sudden you look around and realize you have NO idea how you got where you are? I was only a couple blocks from work when I really looked ahead of me and discovered I was only a couple blocks from work! I have no idea what was playing on the radio, I have no idea what I was thinking about or what traffic was like. Ugh. I guess I wasn't sleeping but still. Sheesh.

Something new to like...

It's called Steampunk art. You'll recognize it when you see it. I didn't know it had an actual name though. I like it a lot...

http://photobucket.com/images/steampunk%20art/

Happy Tuesday!

What a nice long weekend...that was too short! Funny how it always seems like that. Plus, a short work week always seems much too long. Now you have to get 5 days worth of work done in 4. Phooey.

Most of the weekend we just hung out. It was nice, especially for the man. After the whirlwind wedding weekend and 2 weeks of on-call, he really needed the down time. Yesterday I went Mom's and helped her with her new DVR. If you don't have one of those, or TiVo, you should. It's the greatest thing ever! She's going to LOVE it. Then we went winter coat shopping. She's had hers for over 10 years. Even though she says it's still perfectly fine, it's time for a new coat!

We also joined Rhapsody this weekend. So today I'm listening to the craziest mix of new music on my MP3. Michael Buble', Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Kenny Chesney, Kool Kats and Led Zeplin. It's pretty fun. But I don't get the whole Michael Buble' thing. He's okay, but why listen to someone new do the classics if you can listen to the originals? I had to give him a try though. If I really want to listen to those songs again, I'll choose Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett and Dean Martin. I can hardly wait until it's time for Christmas music!!!

The fox!

Well, the fox is still hanging around...I got its picture today. Really, it's so ho hum about everything, it was just odd. See it right there in the middle? Across the street?

That was as close as I got. Even though it acted like it could care less that I was there, it's still a wild animal and I'm not nearly as brave as I used to be.

Awwwww

The rain train

The rain train has moved in. That's what the weather dude called it this morning. Two days of rain complete with flood watches and warnings. Secretly you know they are hoping for disaster. You can practically hear the excitement in their voices. Oh goodie!, there's a chance of flooding!

The leaves are finally starting to change colors. I especially like the trees that start out by changing just on the tips of the branches. It makes the tree look like it has a bee-utiful halo of color on it. I also love the smell of fallen leaves. Got that little chill this morning too! Yup, Autumn is my favorite :-)

Hmmmm

Norway is best place to live, China moves up:
AFP/File Norway has taken the number …
Mon Oct 5, 7:53 am ET

PARIS (AFP) – Norway takes the number one spot in the annual United Nations human development index released Monday but China has made the biggest strides in improving the well-being of its citizens.

The index compiled by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) ranks 182 countries based on such criteria as life expectancy, literacy, school enrolment and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.

China moved up seven places on the list to rank as the 92nd most developed country due to improvements in education as well as income levels and life expectancy.
Colombia and Peru rose five spaces to rank 77th and 78th while France -- which was not part of the top 10 last year -- returns to the upper echelons by moving up three places to number 8.

A child born in Niger can expect to live to just over 50, which is 30 years less than a child born in Norway. For every dollar a person earns in Niger, 85 dollars are earned in Norway.

This year's index was based on data from 2007 and does not take into account the impact of the global economic crisis.

"Many countries have experienced setbacks over recent decades, in the face of economic downturns, conflict-related crises and the HIV and AIDS epidemic," said the UN development report's author Jeni Klugman.

"And this was even before the impact of the current global financial crisis was felt."

Afghanistan, which returns to the list for the first time since 1996, is the only Asian country among the bottom ten which also include Sierra Leone in the 180th spot, just below the Central African Republic.

The top ten countries listed on the index are: Norway, Australia, Iceland, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, France, Switzerland and Japan.

The United States ranks 13th, down one spot from last year.

2. Summer really is over. The highs this week are in the 60's and the lows are in the 40's. I LOVE AUTUMN! I even wore socks to bed last night.

3. Hugh Jackman is so, so, um, HOT. Really, he can do it all. He can sing, he can play a sweet sensitive guy and he rocks as Wolverine. mmmmmmm

4. My brother got married :-) It was fantastic. Now that our new pc is up and running, I'll put up some pictures this week. It was delightful, did I say that already? I love my new sister-in-law and she loves my brother. HOORAY!!!!

5. The weirdest things happen to me. I won't tell you what weird thing happened to me this morning but I will tell you what Chuck's daughter says, "Facebook is the devil". She may be right. Yikes!

Wedded bliss :-)

What a delightful, lovely, wonderful and fun wedding!

Tears, laughter, joy and tons of love. What could be better than that? Not too much.

They wrote part of their vows and made everybody cry right along with them. So sweet. They are so blessed to have so many friends and people that love them. It was great to meet so many of them!

My brother and sister-in-law are the greatest people...there was an older couple getting married the same day and they only had a couple people with them so Jeff and Denae volunteered their wedding set up to them. Denae gave the woman her veil to wear and Jeff walked her down the isle. He got one of his friends to video tape it and another to take pictures. They're going to send them the video and the pictures. He says, "the more you give, the more you get back". Pretty good stuff.

LOVE ROCKS!
LIFE IS GOOOOD!

Ain't love grand?

Tomorrow afternoon we'll be on our way to Laughlin!

I love weddings. I especially love that my baby brother has found the true version! And he's just so dang cute when he says "I love her so much!" *sigh* It's so sweet!

I CAN'T WAIT to see them 'take the plunge' on Saturday. And I'm looking forward to meeting all their friends. They call them selves "the fun group". I bet they are down right embarrassing to be around sometimes! Doesn't that sound great?!?!?!?! I love extroverts :-) And there's the added bonus of seeing my nieces and nephew too. Most of them are all grown up now. It's so weird how that happens.

Fox pee

Well, we got our fox pee last week. I carefully sprinkled it around the woodchucks hole and a little beyond, just to be safe. So far...NO woodchuck!! Woohoo. Although, after talking with a varmit terminator, I learned that their territory covers a lot of ground and they cycle through it. So it might spend a few days at our burrow and then move on to the neighboring burrow etc. Then it will start over. So it could be coincidental that it's not around right now. OR it could be that we didn't really need to buy any fox pee because we have a real live one! I saw it this morning. It didn't seemed to be bothered by my presence and was pretty casual. But I'm happy to think that perhaps, the real red fox has accommodated us by eating the pesky woodchuck!

Why?

From
AP;updated 2:49 p.m. ET, Thurs., Sept . 3, 2009

Salt Lake City- A Salt Lake City woman who held a Guinness World Record for her long fingernails before they broke off in a car crash says it was the most dramatic event of her life.
But Lee Redmond, who lost the fingernails in February, says it's now much easier to do things and her hands seem to fly with the weight of the nails gone.
The 68-year-old won't grow her nails out again, saying it took 30 years the first time and she may not live for another 30.

30 years?!?!?!! Why??? Oh sure, because you can. But just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Why on earth would you want to inconvenience yourself like that? And for 30 years???

People are crazy.

Not so fun things...

Ya know all that fun stuff there was to do over the weekend? Did I do any of it?
NO.
You know why? Of course you don't. But I'll whine and tell you. Because I broke my toe, that's why. STUPID BED LEG. Now my foot is blue and swollen and HURTS! Whew, now I feel better. I've been wanting to whine about it for 2 days now. Actually, it feels better with shoes on. So we spent the weekend doing house chores and bagging leaves. It doesn't seem like we should be doing that already. I mean, it's not officially Autumn until tomorrow. And I got a jump on next weekends stuff. Charged up the camcorder, got batteries for the camera etc. It was still a good weekend, but dang! STUPID TOE.

Fun things

Lot's of fun stuff to do this weekend! Well, except for taking the dogs in to get their shots.
There's Irish Fest downtown. I walked by there at lunch today and it looks like a pretty big event. I think we should go, it's going to be so pretty out. Then there's the big auction;

Whatever is earned from the auction goes to pay the Internal Revenue Service the money authorities say former business woman Susan Ellis owes them.
Authorities say Ellis owed the government over $2 million and was fined $1.2 million. The government believes Ellis went on a big buying spree before entering prison, spending upward of $200,000. They've already auctioned off a boat, jet skis and other property.
This weekend's auction is how the government will get some of its money back - by putting her expensive items on the auction block.
Meantime, it's a designer label fashionista's dream come true.
"We have fur coats. We have designer jewelry, designer hand bags, designer clothing from the most famous designers in the world."

None of us have ever been to an auction...it could be fun!

And...I need to finish up getting ready to leave for bubba's wedding!

Yep, lots of good stuff to do.

(and Autumn is right around the corner!)

boys grow into men?

I know you've probably seen this one, but I was cleaning out some old emails and I ran across this picture. It made me laugh. Laughing is always a good thing so I'm sharing it...

It's called,

why men shouldn't own action figures

Huh? (again)

From The AP
updated 4:44 p.m. ET, Tues., Sept . 15, 2009

WICHITA, Kan. - A tender moment in a trash bin went all wrong for a couple who found themselves being held up at pocket knife point.
Police said two 44-year-olds had climbed into a dumpster to be alone just after 6 p.m. Saturday when two men interrupted them and demanded their belongings. Officers said the man and woman were engaged in "an intimate moment" when they were robbed of their shoes, jewelry and the man's wallet.

I'm not really looking for things that make me scratch my head, honest. Maybe they were homeless and doing it in a trash bin just didn't seem all that bizarre? Not even in my wild inebriated youth would this have been a "go for it" kind of moment! Ick.

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Huh?

WASHINGTON — Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Tuesday the worst recession since the 1930s is probably over, although he cautioned that pain — especially for the nearly 15 million unemployed Americans — will persist.

I'm so busy scratching my head, I just don't have anything to say except, huh?

Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing is one of my top 10 favorite movies. I bet I've seen at least 2 dozen times.

And you are a big fat liar or an emotionally desolate poop if Ghost didn't make you cry.

Wasn't Patrick Swayze great in both of those? Oh, the man said not to forget Road House. To each his own. Anyway, even he was saddened by the news of his death. He said it was hard not to pull for him because he was such a likable guy and he was so determined.

I guess you all know what movies I'll be watching this weekend!!!

Old vs New

First of all, the car show was this last Saturday, not the weekend before. The weather was great, sunny, low humidity, nice breeze. Bill said it was a lot more fun than he anticipated it would be. You know, sometimes small town local things are kind of dorky. They had some really great old cars though. I think the thing that really struck me was that most of them were not restored. They were simply in perfect condition. How does that happen? Anyway, they also had a section of what the man referred to as "bad ASS" cars. There were the usual suspects, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche. But...they also had several Lotus. Whoa. Now those are cool!!

My next old vs new thing is...toilets. So, we live in a house that was built in 1971. It has 2 bathrooms. In one, the toilet is a couple years old, and tall. I like it. The other, is O*L*D. The plumber said at least 20 years. He also told us it would have to be replaced soon ~ it just didn't the have the oomph it used to. Plus, it was big and used a lot of water. We replaced it last weekend. Every time I flush the new one, I'm amazed at how well it works. I know that's dumb but I just got used to the old one. Like the new fridge. The old one was just fine, but the new one has an ice maker! And I still don't mind doing the dishes in the sink. I mean, there's only 2 of us. So the new dishwasher is great, but it's one of those things I could live without.

And my last old vs new thing...food. Did you ever like Spegettio's and Chef Boyardee raviolis when you were younger? Do you remember the snack, Bugles? Those are SO icky by the way.
When was the last time you ate those? I can't even tell you when the last time was for me...35/40 years ago? And I can't tell you what came over me to want them this weekend! That's what we had for dinner Saturday night. Chef Boyardee Raviolis. They were yummy. Don't laugh, try them again! Maybe it was a nostalgic thing?

Early in the morning on September 11, 2001, nineteen hijackers took control of four commercial airliners en route to San Francisco and Los Angeles from Boston, Newark, and Washington, D.C. (Washington Dulles International Airport).

At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 was crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower, followed by United Airlines Flight 175 which hit the South Tower at 9:03 a.m. Another group of hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. A fourth flight, United Airlines Flight 93, whose ultimate target was thought to be either the United States Capitol or White House, crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania at 10:03 a.m, after the passengers on board engaged in a fight with the hijackers.

The south tower fell at approximately 9:59 a.m., after burning for 56 minutes in a fire caused by the impact of United Airlines Flight 175. The north tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m., after burning for approximately 102 minutes.

There were a total of 2,993 deaths, including the 19 hijackers:
246 on the four planes (from which there were no survivors),
2,603 in New York City in the towers and on the ground,
and 125 at the Pentagon. An additional 24 people remain listed as missing.

At least 200 people jumped to their deaths from the burning towers, landing on the streets and rooftops of adjacent buildings hundreds of feet below.

A total of 411 emergency workers who responded to the scene died as they attempted to rescue people and fight fires. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) lost 341 firefighters and 2 FDNY paramedics. The New York City Police Department lost 23 officers. The Port Authority Police Department lost 37 officers, and 8 additional EMTs and paramedics from private EMS units were killed.

Thank you

Tomorrow, if you run into a Firefighter, Law Enforcement Officer or a member of the Armed Services, say thank you. Thank you for serving your community/country. Thank you for your bravery, courage, dedication and commitment. Someday it may be your life.

09/09/09

Though the date lacks the pizzazz of the lucky sevens (07/07/07), that isn't stopping marketers, mathematicians and the marriage-minded from dressing it to the nines.

Lottery users will undoubtedly try their luck by playing 999 Wednesday, and a lucky mother might see herself profiled on the news should she give birth at just the right time: 9:09.

So why not get in on the act?

After all, you're unlikely to experience another single-digit date in your lifetime. The next one won't roll around for 92 years -- until 1/1/2101.

In China, more than 10,000 couples were expected to register their marriages in Beijing on Wednesday and 6,000 more couples were set to tie the knot in Shanghai -- even though it's a weekday, said the Xinhua news agency.

That's because Chinese culture considers the number nine auspicious. In major Chinese dialects, the word for "nine" sounds similar to "longlasting."

Marriage also will be on the mind of many around the world who hope the date will translate to a life on cloud nine.

Ditto for Australia. The state of Queensland has reported a threefold increase in the number of couples tying the knot.

Those who like to play with numbers will have a field day on 09/09/09.

The date falls on a Wednesday in September, both of which have 9 letters.

September 9 also is the 252nd day of the year. 2+5+2=9

In addition, if you multiply a single-digit number by 9, the resulting two digits add up to 9. Consider: 8x9=72 7+2=9

Ummm, ewwwwww

Okay, I have to share this tidbit;

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/32665106/ns/today-today_food_and_wine/?gt1=43001

I really don't have anything to say about it, it's too ummm, ewwwwwwww. I suppose if you are one of the nuts that really likes deep fried twinkies, then you might be up for trying deep fried butter. Me? Uh uh, NO thanks!

Hey Jen, watch out for those Texans, they're kinda weird!!!

3 day weekend!

Ahhhhh. TGIF everybody! (breakfast was yummy as usual) 3 day weekends are great :-) And if you have something fun planned, they are even more fun! Unless you are like me, I got nothing going on!! Let me say it again...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. NO plans. Oh, 1 little thing for Bill. There's a classic car show on Main Street Sunday. But we can walk to that. And we don't even have to go if we don't feel like it! Sometimes it's just nice not to have to do something. You know there's always plenty you could do, and lots you will do, but it's different if you don't have to. The weather is going to be lovely too.

I have my MP3 player on ~ doing tedious stuff at work ~ on an oldies station. Some oldies should be banned and considered crimes to humanity. Like this one...
Sing, sing a song
make it simple, to last your whole life long
Don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear....

Aggghhhh! I mean, I actually like some of The Carpenters songs, but this one is horrible! And if you have it stuck in your head now, I am SO sorry!!!!

.

LOL hahahahaHAHAHAHA

Sometimes I just crack myself up!

You know that hilarious picture I have on my desktop? It still makes me chuckle every morning, by the way. And sometimes I even cock my head to look back at the retarded one!

Well, I had the funniest thought this afternoon...they look like Bill and me!!!!!! Oh, he's the serious one of course, and I'm the dorky one! Oh man that made me laugh!

Eureka!

Fox pee at Bass Pro Shops!

Woohoo! Woodchuck begone!

It's cute???!!!???

That dang woodchuck!! WHAT do we have to do to get rid of that sucker?

I was getting ready to let the dogs out yesterday when I looked out and saw that stupid woodchuck in the middle of the yard. Bill always thought I was exaggerating when I said it was gigantic, so I was a little glad that he finally got to see it. Really, it's bigger than Punxsutawney Phil.

So there it is, happily munching on the wild berries, looking up every once in awhile...and Bill said, "damn. I don't think I could shoot it now ~ it's kinda cute".

I read last night that if you sprinkle fox urine around, a woodchuck will be scared off. Hmmmm, can you buy fox pee? I guess I'll find out!

California wildfires

As a former Californian, I'm always awed at pictures like this...

I don't suppose you ever get used to that if you live there.

-
