Last year, my man and I started watching the Leah Remini series about Scientology. Since then, we've had several conversations about religion and cults. Mostly, they've been along the lines of - what the hell is wrong with you!?!?!?!? I don't get it. AT ALL. I'm not saying I'm a particularly strong person. As a matter of fact, sometimes I'm kind of gullible. Maybe I have a small authority issue. Or, maybe I just grew up in an era where it was trendy to question everything, so I do. I don't know. Regardless, I would question the teachings of a cult. I questioned the teachings of my church! Oh yeah...anyway...we watched the series. It was really fascinating. L. Ron Hubbard was a NUT!!! I can't even believe anyone would fall for that shit. Ewww.
Last week, as I passed a coworker in the hall, she said, OH!, Cynthia, come see my tree! So I did :-) In her work space she has a 3 foot flocked tree adorned with peacocks. It's so pretty. I like those colors together. So I said that I didn't know she was peacock fan. She looked at me and with a straight face said, I'm not. But peacocks have about as much to do with the birth of Christ as a fat little man in a red suit so I figured what the hell! I laughed right out loud! That was pretty funny. So we started talking about religion, in general. She happens to be a very spiritual woman, I knew that. But then she told me something that completely floored me! At one time in her life, she was a member of the People's Temple...you know, Jim Jones and Guyana and drinking the kool aide!?!?!?!?!? She got out a couple years before they went to Guyana though. Whoa! She was pretty straight forward about it so I said, why?! Because I was really interested. Her answer made some sense to me. She said that she was a freshman in college and felt like her life was in kind of a disarray and they sort of said, we can full-fill you and all you have to do is follow the rules. So she thought, hey, I can do that. And everything will be better and my life will be easier and all I have to do is follow the rules. Yep, that sounds good to me! Wow. She barely lasted a year as a cult member and then she went, huh? And snuck out in the middle of the night and went home. Dang. Good for her but again, wow!

BOOM!
This story is interesting to me for so many reasons;
http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/this-angry-inventor-has-a-special-gift-for-package-thieves-revenge/ar-BBH1b5n?li=BBmkt5R&ocid=ientp
It's about a guy who is sick and tired of his packages being stolen off of his porch. You'll have to watch the video. Anyway, first, the whole notion of "porch pirates" is just wrong. What the hell people. Geez! Next, his invention is a little extreme but it is kind of funny. Last, in this article he says that he's caught 20 would be thieves, with his invention! Ummmm, TWENTY? I want to know what the hell he does that he's getting so many packages AND why the hell has he clearly been targeted by porch pirates?? I mean really, why does everyone want to steal his packages?! Something seems a little sketchy to me!

Skip presents?!
69 percent of Americans wish they could skip holiday gift giving
Nearly 7 in 10 Americans say they would skip exchanging gifts this holiday season if friends and family agreed to it.That's according to a new online survey conducted by Harris Poll.
Forty-three percent said they feel pressured to spend more than they can afford. If they didn't have to buy or make gifts, 25 percent said they'd use the money on activities with friends and family, 37 percent would pay down debt, 47 percent would save or invest, and 60 percent said they would spend more time with friends and family.
Isn't that interesting? I think that the 37% that said they would pay down debt, aren't telling the truth. They just don't want to seem like grinches so they chose that answer vs. the I don't want to give a gift answer. That seems true to me though, that most people would rather DO things with their money. Especially as you get older...when you don't have kids at home, etc. That would be a nice shift if people did that. Memories of good times are always better than things :-)

Pretty, pretty, pretty!
Do you like warm white or cool white? I like them both but I guess I prefer warm white. It's just, I don't know, warmer :-) Did you even know that there's a difference? In case you didn't, I'll show you;
This is cool white
This is warm white
I love Christmas lights. I wish we could leave them up all year. Really, how can you not love all this bright, cheerfulness!?!?!

harassment et al part 2
I know what sexual abuse is. Don't you?
I know what they're saying when someone says they've been sexually molested. I bet you do, too. I know what attack means. I know what rape is. Do you?
So, I don't want to talk about those things. Those acts are real. Physical. Tragic.
I want to talk about, allegations. Harassment. Sexual harassment. Misconduct.
Allegations. What happened to, until proven guilty? Yikes. People are being fired left and right because someone said somebody did something. Sure, sometimes that's an appropriate response, but not every time!
Harassment. I've been harassed. I've been sexually harassed. I bet you would be hard pressed to find a woman anywhere in this country, by today's standards, that has not been harassed, ever. In general or sexually. Harassment seems to be so vague to people. If I'm offended because the guy in the cube next to me is telling dirty jokes to his buddy on the phone - is that sexual harassment? Or is it misconduct? It's not directed at ME. If it were me, I would just go over and say, dude, I don't want to listen to your dirty jokes, keep it down. Now, if he gave me a bunch of shit, that's harassment and I would have to tattle on him for being a jerk. But, if my male boss says, I'm gonna give this job to John, unless you fill in the blank.
That's totally about power and control and he's BIG jerk and that's sexual harassment.
Misconduct. Oy. Now the line is becoming real blurry. (For now, I mean verbal misconduct.) Mario Batali, the big chef, has stepped down because of allegations of sexual misconduct. He's 57. Not that that matters, but it kind of does. It speaks to the mindset of a culture. Poor Mario grew up in a culture where it was ok to make sexist remarks and be rude. Until now, maybe no one told him, that's not cool, knock it off. I grew up in the 70's. There was a whole lot of sexual misconduct going on!!!! Everywhere! Whoa. And what about the 60's? Sex, drugs and rock and roll?!?!?!? Sometimes it was a wold whistle or snarky comment. Sometimes it was just that creep that pinched your butt. And that goes for her pinching his butt too! Yeah. I did that in the 70's. I'm guilty of sexual misconduct. Boy am I!
I'm having trouble with whatever sexual misconduct is.
I was just thinking the other day, there are a lot of unacceptable behaviors today, that were perfectly fine 20 years ago. People learned, grew, and moved on. Like; teachers spanking kids in school. That used to be ok. Now it's not. Our opinions and ideas changed and it became a bad thing - we demanded an end to that behavior and moved on. How about the mom that pulled up to the grocery store and told her kids she'd be right back, wait in the car! She could go to jail for that now. But should I press charges against my mom for doing that to me, 20 years ago?
Change is good. I would just hate to see us go so overboard that we won't be taken seriously.
Every revolution has growing pains I guess.

gone things
Burger Chef. Technically I guess, they became Hardee's/Carl's Jr. But Chef Jeff is still gone.
Bob's Big Boy. I read there are still about 100 of them. I loved the big boy!
Ponderosa Steak House. Were they kinda like Sizzler? I don't think I liked them.
Sizzler! I worked there, all through high-school. I have fond memories of them.
Naugles. That was a mexican fast food place in California. Do you remember them?
Sambo's. I remember them, with the tiger and the little kid.
Chi-Chi's. I liked them. I still buy their salsa :-)
Steak and Ale. I don't think I ever ate there.
Laughner's Cafeteria. My first job was busing tables there!
Victoria Station. I loved them...and eating in railroad cars. It was cool!

the first ammendment
Let's look at it again;
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
I'm certain that the Bill of Rights wasn't written to be "interpreted" to mean whatever suits you. Nowhere in there does it say you have the right to express yourself artistically. Does it? I guess you could argue that your expression of speech IS art. I get that. But there are still limits and boundaries provided by other laws. Also, it doesn't say that your freedom of religion includes discrimination.
I just bring this up, again, because the Colorado baker's case is in the Supreme Court this morning. You remember this one, right? The baker says it's against his religious beliefs to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple.
Yes, I believe the baker has a right to his own religious beliefs, in his own personal life. But he owns a business. A business that's open to the public, to serve the public. I believe he is discriminating against the gay couple, by refusing to bake a cake for them, period. I bet there were several different ways he could've gotten around that, if he chose to. Also, because I have an issue with organized religion and hypocrisy, I feel like the baker is using his religion to be a jerk. I don't like that. Pretty sure God would forgive you for baking a cake for a gay couple. That's his thing, right? Forgiveness?!!
I'm really surprised this has gone all the way to the Supreme Court.

Lacking
If you want to argue for something that you want, you should put more effort and creativity into your fight! Come on people!
Today at work, I'm compiling a report of all the people in our department that want to be a teleworker. You know, work from home. Everyone who wants to do that, has to fill out an application. Some people are legitimate teleworkers. They work in the field. They come into the office rarely. Other people work from home 1 or 2 days a week, because of child care, etc. So it's super nice of their supervisors to approve those arrangements.
You wouldn't believe the stupid things people put for why they want to be a teleworker!!
Like;
I would be more productive because I wouldn't have to use that time commuting.
Umm, your commute time isn't done "on the clock" dummy.
My home is a calmer, quieter and safer place.
We have a bigger problem than you commuting if you feel unsafe at work!
I lose an entire work day, commuting.
So.
Small noises such as coughing, phone calls and conversation are very distracting to me
Your poor kids!!
I would be able to watch my grand-kids
Seriously? Stop.
Mostly, their reasons are their commute. 30 minutes is just so stressful!! But I like the days they pick, to work from home...I want to work from home on Mondays and Friday, or Thursdays and Fridays. Yeah, right.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Soon, most of you will be gathered around your friends and family, celebrating another opportunity to be together. I'm pretty sure that it seems like it was just March, a couple months ago. In the blink of an eye, it whooshes by. In the blink of an eye, lives are changed forever. In the blink of an eye, the toddler you cherished becomes a teenager that's barely recognizable and an adult with a family of their own. In the blink of an eye, you have gray hair, need glasses and you just want to wear comfy shoes. In the blink of an eye, the world has become so small. Things are changing so quickly. It's important to stop every now and then and think about how much you have. What makes you smile. How lucky you are to be loved.
I am thankful/grateful for;

I've felt loved, my whole life. I'm pretty lucky.
Bee happy. It's a wonderful life,
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

NYC subway to use gender-neutral terms
during announcements
during announcements
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
PUBLISHED:
UPDATED:
NEW YORK (AP) - When it comes to the New York City subways, there's no such thing as
ladies and gentlemen.
Conductors on subway trains have been told to replace "ladies and gentlemen" when
making announcements with the gender-neutral terms of "passengers," ''riders," and
"everyone."
It's part of an effort from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to improve
communication with passengers frustrated with having to deal with a system
troubled with delays, mechanical failures and even derailments.
Other directives include giving subway riders as much information as possible in case
of delays and mentioning nearby New York City sites of interest at various stations.

Sorry, I don't get it. I mean, even if you are transgender, you're still identifying yourself
as a male or female, right? What the hell is wrong with ladies and gentlemen?? And really,
what's that got to do with delays? Man, that's some funny stuff right there!

World Kindness Day
World Kindness Day was yesterday.
I'm pro kindness :-) Don't you think everything else would fall into place if everyone was more kind? Kind to each other. Kind to animals. Kind to the earth. Yep. I'm pro kindness.
Kindness is such an easy thing, too. It doesn't hurt you to be kind. It doesn't cost you to be kind. Why is it so hard? I think it's just because people are in such hurry, all the time. I'm guilty of that, a lot. They don't even notice what's going on around them. They're so impatient with everything and everybody. I'm going to try harder not to be like that.
Last week, while I was walking at lunch, I saw a woman who was on her way to a conference with one of those little portable hand carts, filled with reading material. It fell over, spewing brochures, etc. everywhere. People just kept walking around her. So I stopped and help her pick up all her stuff. It took less than 5 minutes. I felt a little bad though, that she thanked me so profusely. Like I had done something special. That's sad. It shouldn't have been such a big deal.
Then I saw this story in the news;
https://www.wthr.com/article/walmart-cashier-shows-patience-and-kindness-when-assisting-flustered-gentleman
That cashier was right.
Kindness does matter.

Then I saw this story in the news;
https://www.wthr.com/article/walmart-cashier-shows-patience-and-kindness-when-assisting-flustered-gentleman
That cashier was right.
Kindness does matter.

1st Ammendment
Do you know what the 1st amendment really says??
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,
or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to
petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Congress shall make no law respecting (with
reference or regard to) an establishment of religion, or prohibiting
the free exercise thereof; or abridging (curtail (rights or privileges)) the
freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to
assemble (gather together in one place for a common purpose), and to
petition (make or present a formal request to (an authority) with
respect to a particular cause) the Government for a redress (remedy
or set right (an undesirable or unfair situation) )of
grievances (a real or imagined wrong or other cause for complaint or
protest, especially unfair treatment).
from dictionary.com
In interpreted laymen's terms;
The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is a part of the United States Bill of Rights that protects freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, and right to petition.
It seem pretty straight forward, doesn't it?
But then I found this version;
First Amendment definition. An amendment to the United States Constitution guaranteeing the rights of free expression and action that are fundamental to democratic government. These rights include freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech
I'm pretty sure that the 2nd one means something different than the first one. The right of free expression and action, seems a lot more vague. I mean, the right to free expression/action, could mean almost ANYTHING! If I want to write obscenities on the front of my house, isn't that a form of expression? If I want to flip the bird the bird at the president, and my boss fires me, can't I sue him for violating my right of free expression/action? How about if I'm a baker and I don't want to bake/decorate a cake for a gay couple because I have a right to religious and expression freedom. You can see where this is going, right?
No wonder, as a country, we're so litigious.
I wish people could just keep this in mind...just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Nutrition
Here's what I've learned about eating well and nutrition....don't eat.
Sodium is bad for you.
Sugar is bad for you.
Carbs are bad for you.
Processed foods are bad for you.
Too much, is bad for you.
Not enough, is bad for you.
Really, just stop eating!
Half your plate should be vegetables. 1/4 should be protein and 1/4 should be carbs.
Try to do 80% of your shopping on the perimeter of the store, where all the fresh foods are, and 20% of your shopping in the middle, where all the processed foods are.
Here is something else I discovered, when we're on vacation, we eat a lot less. Mostly because we don't snack. And I guess, we're too busy to be boredom eaters.
Also, we very rarely eat fast food. Some people eat out, 2, 3, 4 times a week! I would rather eat at home and/or pack my lunch.
Aaaand, if I'm going to a burger joint, I'm going for the burger. Period. Don't tell me to order a salad. Seriously. If I HAD to do that, I just wouldn't go. Geez!
All of that said, we ate a lot better when we were kids. If you're over 40, did you have chips and/or cookies in your house all the time?? We didn't. There was no such thing eating because you were bored. You didn't eat if you were stressed, you smoked. Or drank. Or both!
We ate real food too. Butter, sugar, Crisco, eggs.
Interesting.

buh bye
I saw a list yesterday, you know I love lists, of things in the office that have gone the way of the dinosaur. I took exception to about half of them though, so I won't give you the whole list. Here are some of them though;
the typewriter - we keep a few of them in the store room though
the Rolodex!
carbon paper
airmail envelopes
the office "bar" - such a shame.
secretary pools - you know, like in Working Girl?
rotary phones
the dictaphone
pantyhose - thank heavens!
office parties held at the office - when there were still office bars!
ashtrays!!! - I wonder if you can even find those in antique stores?
palm pilots
chalkboards - because now they're whiteboards
mimeograph machine - I don't even know what that is
Some of the items on the list that I took exception to are;
flash drives - everybody has one. I don't where this list maker works but they should get out more
cubicles - same as above
sticky notes - same as above
desks with chairs - there's an agenda hidden in this one. sitting is the new smoking so nobody should have a chair. Everyone should have standing desks. Uh huh.
drip coffee machines - come on now. most people aren't going to spend $110+ on a work coffeemaker.
I didn't see the Franklin Planner on the list though. That was huge, back in the day. Anyway, it had some fun things on the list.

love these!
I love optical illusions!
This guy is wearing board shorts that are black and white.
this is one of those where the lines are actually straight across, not crooked.
this one practically broke the internet! below is the reveal...
This isn't really an illusion, but more of a, what's wrong with this picture. If you can't figure it out, I put the answer in the comments.
Are these craters or sand dunes?? The correct answer is sand dunes.
Basically, your brain thought the sun was in the 1:00 position, casting shadows from the upper right. However, the sun was actually casting shadows from the upper left. If you look at the photo upside down, the illusion disappears. Isn't that crazy!?
you know this one...both of the monsters are the same size.
This one makes my head hurt and my eyes water.

This one is neat because it's not really a spiral. They're really concentric circles! Whoa.
The blue and the green background are the same color.

crazy stuff in the news
Here's a story about a guy who got pulled over for singing too loudly, in his car! Oh man! I don't sing well so I do ALL my loudest singing in the car! Not cool.
This is SO AWESOME!
You know how much I love technology! I love gadgets. These are all pretty dang cool. I own several of them!
Here are the best animal photos for October :-)
I love shoes. But seriously, if I were going to spend 15.1 MILLION dollars on a pair, they have to at least be cute!!
See, it's not ALL ugly, negative news!!

vacation/family/wedding
We just had a whirlwind vacation! It's hard when your family lives close to each other but far away too. You want to see everyone but all the travel time stinks!
Day 1: We flew out to Salt Lake City and promptly drove 4+ hours, down to St. George. We had serious butt fatigue by the time we arrived. The daughter was getting married the next day, in the Mormon temple, which we couldn't attend...because we're not worthy, not being good Mormon's and all. I have a lot to say about that, but I already have, so...
Day 2: The wedding reception was nice. We didn't get to spend anytime with the daughter and new son-in-law though. That was a little disappointing. It was kind of like being the aunt and uncle from out of town, who comes to visit at Christmas. All of my man's siblings were there though. That was fun! And fun for them too. They haven't all been together since their dad passed away a few years ago. It was great to see them all. They're all so different from each other. I like that.
and look at this extra unique and pretty boutonniere! It's made out of wood shavings!
Day 3: We drove back up to Salt Lake City, where we got to spend some time with the son, his delightful wife and their 5 kids! They drove back from St. George that day too, so everyone was a little road weary.
Day 4: Even though we had lived in Salt Lake for a couple years, there were things we never did, like go out to the Great Salt Lake. So that's what we did! Aaaand we went out to Antelope Island. Both of them were SO much bigger than I imagined! We saw a heard of bison, a couple small groups of antelopes, and a coyote. The bison were the coolest! Really, have YOU ever seen a heard of bison, in person? Then we drove up to Ogden, just to check it out and back to the son's home for the evening. I like all that visiting!
Day 5: Today was mountain day!! I much prefer the mountains to the beach. It was fantastic. When you live in the Midwest, you don't see a lot of topography :-) There is snow up there already! And it's Autumn, so wow! It sure was pretty, and quiet, and it smelled good. After that, back to the son's home again. They have a very busy household! All that youthful exuberance is wonderful to be around, but whew! That's why you have to have kids when you're young...when you have the kind of energy you need!
Day 6: home again. As nice as it is to get away, it's always nice to come back to the comfort of what you know. Not surprisingly, Salt Lake City has changed a lot in the last 25 years. It's about doubled in size! We really liked it when we lived there but it's too peopley for us now. Yep, we're old!

questions
* What are you sure of?
Isn't that a great question?
I'm sure the earth is round.
I'm sure that I don't like mangos.
I'm sure that someone loves me.
I'm sure that smoking is bad for you.
I'm sure that it's impossible to pick ONE favorite movie or song.
I'm sure politicians don't care about me.
I'm sure that I couldn't live without sugar.
Here's another great question (I've asked before)
* How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were?
I'd say, late 30's, early 40's.
* When it's all said and done, will you have said more than you've done?
* If not now, then when?!
Do you have a favorite, thought provoking question?
