cute

Look at that little bit, all snuggled in. It cracks me up how tiny she can make herself.

He says all the time that the dogs don't like him. Uh huh.

Sweet Greta. She'll put up with just about anything.

More rules

My favorite part about the end of the year is all the “year in review” articles. I love those…mostly because I don’t remember ½ of them.

I also love reading about all the new laws coming up in 2012, like:

* People 18 and under in Illinois will have to wear seat belts while riding in taxis for school-related purposes, and Illinois school boards can now suspend or expel students who make explicit threats on websites against other students or school employees.

* Florida will take control of lunch and other school food programs from the federal government, allowing the state to put more Florida-grown fresh fruit and vegetables on school menus.

* A California law will add gays and lesbians and people with disabilities to the list of social and ethnic groups whose contributions must be taught in history lessons in public schools. The law also bans teaching materials that reflect poorly on gays or particular religions. (Opponents have filed five potential initiatives to repeal the requirement outright or let parents remove their children while gays' contributions are being taught.) I know a couple of gay people that I’m going to ask about this…my question would be, why does it matter that you’re gay if you’ve made some newsworthy contribution to the world? I thought you wanted to be accepted as a person? Now you want to be accepted because you’re gay? I don’t get it.

* In Arkansas, facilities that perform 10 or more nonsurgical abortions a month must be licensed by the state Health Department and be subject to inspections by the department. You mean they don’t already? Ewwwww!

* California is also addressing illegal immigration, but with a bill that allows students who entered the country illegally to receive private financial aid at public colleges

* Many laws aim to protect young people. In Colorado, coaches will be required to bench players as young as 11 when they're believed to have suffered a head injury. The young athletes will also need medical clearance to return to play. It really twirks my butt that there has to be a law to make adults responsible.

* Ohio is also one of eight states with automatic increases in the minimum wage taking effect Jan. 1. The others, with increases between 28 and 37 cents, are Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Montana, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.

And of course there will be the ongoing debate about distracted driving. All because the NSTB said over 30,000 people die every year because they are distracted while driving due to cell phones/texting/talking. Excuse me but aren’t kids in the back seat terribly distracting to a driver? What about having a conversation with someone in the passenger seat? That seems worse to me than using a Bluetooth/headset because you actually turn your head to speak to that person.

Did you know that according to the CDC, 175,000 children drown every year. Where’s the outrage over that? Shouldn’t we fill in every swimming pool and ban swimming in lakes and the ocean? Oh, and no more taking baths either. Over 400k people die every year because of smoking. More than 40,000 people die in car accidents ever year, not including distracted or drunk driving. And according to Wikipedia, 100,000 people a year die from alcohol abuse in the U.S

I will concede that 30k deaths due to using a cell phone while driving is tragic. Does it require a law to correct though? Do you need a law to tell you “don’t be so stupid”?! More rules, less freedom. Yeah, that’s what I want.

hahahaha, see how distracted I got right there? Thank heavens I wasn't in the car!

Makes you wanna go, hmmmm

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days."
The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations."

She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day or didn't call it "green."

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right. We didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana . In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right. We didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Wait! There's more!!

There's just so much in the news to talk about!
Do you have White Castle in your area? If you don't, you don't know what you're missing - wink, wink. If you do, this will crack you up...White Castle wants to serve beer and wine. Let it sink in. Wham! Isn't that hilarious?

The Stonehenge mystery just got even bigger. It's been determined that the stones were quarried over a 100 miles away. So.
I'm thinkin' if they found a way to display them like that, 100 miles was no big deal.

TODAY marks the official count down to doomsday. One year from today, according to the Mayan calendar, the world will end. yawn. It's a little like Y2K isn't it?

And the new Cover Girl ads, starring Taylor Swift have been pulled. It turns out that the ads, which are about this really great new mascara, show Taylor with some seriously fabulous eye lashes...that were digitally enhanced. Even though somewhere in the tee tiny print there's a disclaimer, Proctor and Gamble decided to pull the ads. I think I'm supposed to feel good about them for pulling dishonest ads before they caught hell for them. But I don't. Hmmmm

Aaaand, Chaz Bono's girlfriend of 12 years broke up with him. Like no one saw that coming? I mean, if she's a lesbian she wants to be with a woman, not a man. Right? Duh. He/she still wants to be with a woman only now he/she wants to be a man who wants a woman ~ sort of.

OK, I think I'm done for the day. Now that we've solved the worlds problems and all.
Going to see the dentist today and then off to Costco for my Christmas shopping spree.

where's the SNOW??????

Today's high is 53! Humph. I need some snow. WHY does Texas have snow and we don't???? Chuck says we'll have a rain/snow mix on Saturday...but that doesn't count. Last year at this time we'd had over 15 inches already. This year? NADA! dagnabit.

So maybe not THIS cold....

And maybe not THIS much....

But something! Tomorrow is the first day of winter for heavens sake.

music

Lady Antebellum has the best new hit. I loved it the first time I heard it. Mostly because when I heard it for the first time it evoked memories I hadn't had in quite awhile! It was awesome! Now when I hear it, it makes me smile about my misspent youth :-) I love it when a song does that.

We Owned the Night

Tell me have you ever wanted
someone so much it hurts?
Your lips keep trying to speak
but you just can't find the words.
Well I had this dream once;
I held it in my hands.

She was the purest beauty
but not the common kind.
She has a way about her
that made you feel alive.
And for a moment
you made the world stand still.

Yeah we owned the night

You had me dim the light'
You danced just like a child
The wine spilled on your dress
and all you did was smile
Yeah, it was perfect
I hold it in my mind

Yeah, we owned the night

When the summer rolls around
and the sun starts sinking down
I still remember you
Oh, I remember you
And I wonder where you are

Are you looking at those same stars again?
Do you remember when?
We woke under a blanket
All tangled up in skin
Not knowing in that moment
we'd never speak again
But it was perfect;
I never will forget

When we owned the night.

Love this...

Neat.

Here are the latest finished quilled projects...

1st, Merry Christmas Chucks daughter!!
Yellow and cheerful just for you;

2nd, for my boss;

Now she can be quiet. I don't like her all that much so I didn't bust my butt to do something nice for her. Seriously, this one only took me about 3 hours. But the nice frame and double mat make it look pretty good :-) She was excited and I scored some points.

Guess what this is...

Go ahead, guess. Oh c'mon, at least try a little. (I'll tell you in a minute)

Only 6 more days until Christmas! Are YOU ready?? I am. Well, except for not sending out cards this year. Oh, and nothing to the kids. Oh, and the grandsons gifts will arrive after Christmas. *sigh* I used to bee sooooo much better at this!

Moving forward...we've been eligible to get new phones since last summer. The problem is, we both have regular ol' cell phones and with the exception of a couple dorky phones w/out keyboards, you can pretty much only get smart phones. I wasn't sure I was ready to do that. Then, on Sprints website last week, they had the HTC Evo 4G for FREE! Over 4100 users gave it an average of 4 and a 1/2 stars. Yes, I caved and ordered 2 phones and changed our plan. We got them Friday. Bill had to activate his right away. I had some things to do this weekend and wasn't ready to commit the necessary time until yesterday. These phones are crazy! There's a flashlight in it! You can have video calls with people! You can speak what you want to text and it will convert your voice to text! You can get into Goggle and 'say' dogs and it will look up dogs. The instruction book is almost 200 pages. I'll never know everything it can do!

OK, did you take a stab at the picture? Give up? It's a picture of the two corners of a crown (in my mouth) that broke off this morning. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? You would think I would be used to this kind of thing by now. I'm not. It still REALLY ticks me off! grumble, grumble, grumble.

whhhhooooooooosh

That's the sound of time flying by! I seem to be having a hard time "getting it together" this holiday season. No, I'm done with my shopping. The tree and all the decorations are up. Everything else is undone though. So...if you were hoping for a pretty, awesome, hand quilled Christmas card this year, forget about it. I even started in October! Imagine, ME being ahead of the game! Then I had paying customers (yessssss) so I never got around to finishing them. As a matter of fact, I probably won't send any cards out this year. Dang it! I'm pretty sure that the grandsons gifts will be late too. Dang it!! Aaaand the only holiday show I've watched so far was Rudolph. I have a list of things to do as long as my arm ~ tic toc tic toc. Dang it!!!

OK...last Thursdays "cancer free celebration" day turned out really nice. He said it was like having two birthdays this year. Awwwww. He passed on the donuts though. Instead he had a Cinnabon for dessert, late in the evening. He picked a movie on PPV to watch - Cowboys and Aliens. We are both still in awe over the HD picture! Oh yeah, the movie was ok. Lots of great special fx and it actually worked, the whole cowboys fighting aliens thing. Kinda fun. The weekend flew by, as expected and now there's only one more until Christmas. Really? The end of the year is fast approaching. Really?

Youth is wasted on the young. I wish I had known that there were going to be SO many things I wanted to do when I got older!

celebrating!

Tomorrow is a big celebration day for us...it marks the one year anniversary of Bill's surgery and becoming, officially, cancer free :-) Yesssssssssssssssssssssss!
He has tomorrow and Friday off because he's still trying to use up some vacation time, so I'm going to take tomorrow off and treat him to all his favorite things.
Donuts in morning
His favorite sushi place for lunch
Pizza for dinner
and ice cream!
And anywhere he wants to go in between all that caloric intake.
I even bought him a (little) bag of corn nuts and I'll let him eat them in the house. I don't usually because I think they STINK! But I'll suck it up...tomorrow only.
I hope he has a great day!

PSA

What?!

http://www.gaspinfo.com/en/choking.html

You know, I'll admit it, I did drugs in high school. Hey, it was the 70's. My generation never heard, "this is your brain...." and we didn't have D.A.R.E. What we did have though, were parents that were engaged in our lives. And yes, I'm aware that there are far more dangers out there these days. I'm also aware that people did some pretty wacky things to get high in the 70's. But seriously, huffing? And now this suffocating thing? I don't get it. You would actually TRY to kill yourself for a few seconds of lightheadedness????

I brought all of that up because of the article, I know you've seen it, about the 10 year old boy that police say committed suicide. His parents said it was a tragic end to a deadly game.

Sometimes the world seems like such a discouraging place. sigh

doubly happy!

It's going to snow tonight! woohoo! Aaaaaand Rudolph is on ~ in HD! What could be better than that?!?!?!?!?! I might have to stop on the way home and get some Bryers Butter Pecan ice cream. My night is going to be close to perfect. Yesssss.

Over the weekend I finished my last paying customers' quilled art;
She thought it was wonderful :-) Hooray! Now I can go back to my own stuff. I think I'm going to do one that I can hang in my cube, where people can see it. You know...exposure.

Gobble, gobble, oh, never mind

Thanksgiving has passed now. I hope y'all had a lovely day eating too much and spending time with your families. We did for sure. Except, I'm SO tired of being sick...again! Good grief, how many colds can you catch in one season?! Grrrr. And how much snot can your head hold anyway? Sorry, but it's amazing to me.

Did you shop yesterday? I only went out on Black Friday once, that was enough. But there were some really great deals out there! Best Buy had some on-line only deals on Thursday, one of which was computer...that Mom bought!! Hooray! I was so excited for her. She's had her current pc for almost 7 years. Unheard of these days. It's finally winding down and ready to crash any second. She'll be a lot happier on-line now :-) Then, you won't believe this, she went out shopping yesterday! MY Mom, who HATES crowds, went out shopping! Whoa. She was super duper happy to get the last pair of lighted reindeer for her yard. She loves yard art. Then on a whim, she decided to hit Best Buy before she went home. They had a TV we were looking at for her, at a great price. They didn't have any left in the store but the helper dude checked the warehouse and found one for her. Holy bananas! Now she's getting a new HD TV too!!!! Yup, it was a pretty good day for da mama yesterday. I can't wait to get her all set up.

We didn't do anything yesterday. Well, I slept almost the whole day. I feel better today. Oh, we went to see the Vienna Boys Choir last night. They were awesome. I want to know how they get a bunch of little boys to behave, to remain disciplined and motivated. They were pretty cute and you just can't believe that the sounds you're hearing are human voices.

I'm going out today, but not for super sale things. We need another coffee maker. We have terrible luck with coffee makers. And then it's off to HOBBY LOBBY!  Yesssssssss. Then home to decorate -  Christmas here I come!

Thanksgiving humor

I really had to search for some good Thanksgiving cartoons! Poor Thanksgiving, so snubbed.

This next vintage ad made me smile;

The best for last;

gobble gobble!

What a gloomy weekend it was. Blah. I got a lot done but it would have been nicer if there had been sunshine coming in the windows.

Last week I put some leftover pecan pieces (from a cheesball I made) out in the bird feeder. Apparently wood peckers really like nuts. And they want to tell all their peers where the nuts are. We have a whole new variety of birds at our feeder now.  It's really cool.
We have Downy Woodpeckers; (by the way, I didn't take any of these pictures)

And a Red Bellied Woodpecker;
a Nuthatch
these cute little chirpers, called a tufted titmouse
the state bird of course;

These little wrens, which end up in our sun room all the time;

blue jays;

and my favorite little winter bird, chickadees!

Plus, all the sparrows and doves. Bill and I, separately have even seen a hawk sitting on the back fence. Picking off the squirrels I hope! Maybe I'll become a bird watcher when I retire :-)

Happy Thanksgiving 2011

Would it be Thanksgiving if you weren’t thankful for anything? You must be thankful for something? I am. As a matter of fact, here’s my annual list;

Let’s start this year with all of life’s daily blessings ~ a source of income, a place to hang your hat at the end of the day, a car to get you where you want to be, a closet full of clothes and really comfy shoes, a cupboard full of food, good health. If you have all of those things, you have enough. I have enough. I have more than my share actually.

Now let’s move on to the really BIG things!

I’m immensely grateful that my husband will celebrate his one year anniversary cancer free, on December 8th! AND, my Mom celebrated 3 years cancer free!
Yep, that chalks it up for me, see ya next year.

No, no, just kidding. It’s just so hard to believe that there’s anything else I could be grateful for. Surprisingly though, there is still a long list of things to be grateful and thankful for;

Dogs - Nobody should be without one - or 2 (or 3? c'mon, please honey?)
Cafeteria style mac and cheese – OK, so I’m dork. It's my guilty pleasure and I know you have your own.
New hobbies – I LOVE quilling!!! I think everyone else loves my new hobby too ;-)
Aleve – the best ever! for achy muscles.
My dentist – even though I have the most expensive mouth this side of the mighty Miss, I still love my dentist for never being the cause of my pain.
Spinach artichoke dip from Costco – I’m not a gourmet food kind of gal (evidenced by the mac and cheese comment above, but this stuff is scrumptious!)
Relpax – that’s the miracle migraine medicine – whew.
½ caf coffee – because as I’ve gotten older, I just can’t live on caffeine and cigarettes anymore.
…speaking of…NOT smoking – It’s been over 3 years now.
Homemade Saki from the Ozarks – mmmmm yummy! Don't laugh...the Ozarks are beautiful and filled with interesting and colorful folks.
My desktop fan at work – lordy those hot flashes suck!
Cheerful people.
Ugg boots in the winter.
Four seasons – Hyacinths, sunny days, sparkly snow and especially autumn.
Music – still lovin’ my MP3 player, filled with a wide range of tunes. Some of which actually make me wiggle in my chair.
E-mail jokes and videos that make me laugh out loud.
Books - lots of them. The heavy kind with paper pages. I know you might love your e-reader but for now I'm sticking with the traditional version.
Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry syrup. I couldn’t have pancakes without it!

I'm thankful for the constant love of my husband and family. Not always easy I know, but always worth it!

And I am profoundly thankful every day for this beautiful adventure that is life. Complete with all its ups and downs, setbacks and lessons learned, sadness, joys, good times and silliness. How about you? What are you thankful for?

Life is good.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

blog worthy

In case you missed these...

First up;

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/british-rugby-player-chris-birch-2005-stroke-turned-gay-article-1.974551

If you don't have time to read it, it's about a guy who suffered a stroke and "came out" on the other side, gay. Uh huh.

Next;

Updated: Sep 26, 2011 4:13 AM EDT
Moderator: So you get this entire group of actors together -- what was rehearsal like?

WASHINGTON - Some companies are still trying to figure out how far they can go in limiting what employees say about work online in the age of Twitter and Facebook.

Confusion about what workers can or can't post has led to a surge of more than 100 complaints at the National Labor Relations Board - most within the past year - and created uncertainty for businesses about how far social media policies can go.

Michael Eastman, labor law policy director at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, says employers are struggling to figure out what the right policies are and what they should do when these cases arise.

The labor board's acting general counsel, Lafe Solomon, says federal law permits employees to talk about their jobs and working conditions with co-workers without reprisal.

So the point of this article is, employers want to retaliate against you if you diss the company you work for, the job you do, or your co-workers, on Face Book. I'm not crazy about the whole social media thing and the immediacy of it but, you have a right to say what ever you want.

Next, along those lines;

Brett Ratner was hired to produce the Oscars next year. He stepped down after being harshly criticized for what the media described as a homophobic slur. The content of the offensive slur follows;

Moderator: So you get this entire group of actors together -- what was rehearsal like?

Ratner: Rehearsal? What’s that? Rehearsal’s for fags. Rehearsal. Not much. A lot of prep, preparation, complex action sequences, visual effects. Storyboards, animatics. The process was I made the actors stick to the script. And they wanted to, because the script was great.

So, I looked up the definition of homophobic and it says, noun: unreasoning fear of or antipathy toward homosexuals and homosexuality. Do YOU see that feeling expressed in what Ratner said? Me either. It's just an expression. It didn't mean anything. Perhaps he could have chosen his wording a little better but, FREE SPEECH people! I used to call my little brother queer when were kids. He hated that. That doesn't make me homophobic. And even if he is homophobic and outwardly expresses his feelings, so what! Aren't we entitled to our own opinions and feelings?? What if I don't like you because you're a jerk, who happens to be gay. Does that make me anti gay? He also offended a lot of people with his antics on the Howard Stern program. Again, see above. And besides that, if you listen to Howard Sterns program, don't you expect vulgarity and the like? Duh. I don't like Howard Stern so I don't listen, hence, I don't give a shit what Ratner said on Howard Sterns program. He probably made it up for ratings anyway.

I'm done now.

Lots going on!

What a nice 4 day weekend we had!

We got sooo much accomplished at my Moms. We put a wall up above the fireplace, sanded and painted. It really brightens up the room without a whole brick wall. And my handyman put up a new wall around her vanity area too. Oh, and installed a new toilet! Bill said it seems like she's spending a lot of money but she had a really good point...when she was in the condo her association fees were $190 a month. She's not paying that anymore! That's a good way to look at it.

I got A LOT of quilling done - one whole project as a matter of fact. My 2nd paying customer :-) He saw this one;
And asked me if I would make one for him for a Christmas gift for his sister. I said of course. I started with this;

But then I had to scratch it. The letters were so close together that unless you were looking at it straight on, it was all a blur. Phooey! So I went with this instead;

Much better. Whew. Here's the final product;

He said she's kind of whimsical. I hope he likes it!

I have one more paying project to do so my project has been put aside...but here it is so far;

And on top of all that, I cleaned out 3 closets and filled up 5 trash bags full of clothes for Good Will.

I'm REALLY going to enjoy being retired!

football

I'm not really a football fan but man was this ever FUNNEEEE!!!

Indianapolis - A seven-year old boy was at the center of a Marion County courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Indianapolis Colts Football Team, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

Have mercy.

leaf season

I love Autumn. I know you know that. Really though, isn't it beautiful?
Here in the mid-west we're just finishing up with leaf season. The man I bagged up 21 fifty five gallon bags of leaves Saturday. It was a perfect day weather wise. Blue, blue skies and not a single cloud, upper 60's, ahhhhhhhh. Today it's very blustery out there. Everywhere you look it's raining leaves. I love that! I guess by this weekend we'll be done with the raking and bagging.

Yesterday was election day...did you vote? We didn't have to vote in our city - no one was running against any of the incumbents. Isn't that the craziest thing? So I had a nice day off to do nothing. I didn't do nothing but it was still a nice day off. I'm also taking tomorrow off, which will make it another 4 day weekend for me. Yessssss! The man is taking both those days off as well. And he still has soooo many vacation days he's going to loose, his boss is making him take 3 more days the week of Thanksgiving. Geez. I better start making him a list of things to do :-)

Friday, November 4, 2011

Oh ok...

...I'll catch up...

Let's see, The wind symphony was nice. I was hoping for scary music but it was mostly Star Wars, Toy Story, some music from Wicked and some new composer. Really though, for the cost of a movie, you can go to the symphony! I think that's pretty great.

Footloose was A LOT of fun. I love that some of the songs they kept, they gave a modern twist. That was cool. They could have changed it a little more but it stuck pretty close to the original. Willard was the best character! Sooo funny. And I got some baskets for the craft section of my Library/craft room.

Trick or treating at Mom's was delightful. We gave away treats to the bigger kids and little stuffed animals to the little people. It was a big hit! Some of those little kids are just too dang cute! Even the little girl whose mom drove her from house to house. Yeah, only in Carmel would a mom actually drive her kid around. Oh brother.

Then I had a cold/flu for the first part of the week. Yuck. By the time I got back to work for a full day on Thursday, I felt really out of the loop. It's so weird.

This weekend is going to be sunny and dry. Hooray! I see lots of leaf raking in our immediate future. Plus, next weekend we're going to spend a day working at Moms, so I think this weekend we should shop for what what we'll need. Some bathroom fixer upper stuff. It'll be fun. Plus, I really need to get started on the quilling projects I'm getting paid for...tic toc tic toc! OH! Aaaand, the next concert in the bluegrass series is Saturday night - The Del McCoury Band with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. We've been listening to some of their stuff on youtube...I think it's going to be FUN!

This is the best cartoon!!

It's on my daily calendar for yesterday...I LOVE it!
Soooooo funny!!!!

Halloween humor and other stuff

Hooray for Fridays!

Tomorrow, Chuck's daughter and I are going to see the new Footloose. I think it will be fun, not blasphemous  like if they re-did Dirty Dancing. I'm looking forward to it. I'm also looking forward to a little shopping spree at Old Time Pottery! I'll be looking for baskets for my future library/craft room. It's another step forward.

Sunday, Mom and I are going to see the Indianapolis Wind Symphony. Their performance is called Halloween and Hollywood. I hope it's lots of scary music!! Muwaaahahahaha.

Now for the humor!

 Pie, right?

 Other uses for candy corn

I know this next one is hard to read so...those devils can't seem to get the matches to work so they can light the candles on the cake. Finally, one of them says, "Well...here's the problem...this is a match made in Heaven!" hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

And my 2 favorites this year?

Pins and needles...

...pins and needles...pins and needles...tic toc...tic toc...

Today at 11:00 the man had his big one year check-up since being diagnosed with the big ugly C word. Geez, I've had to pee a dozen times this morning just waiting for him to call!
Whew ~ it all turned ok though :-) HOORAY! Now he won't have to worry for another 6 months. I have to admit, I don't worry as much as he does. I always assume it'll be fine. Thankfully, it is always fine.

Mom and I talked about that the other day ~ post cancer check-ups. And even she said, it's true, you never stop worrying. Not on a daily basis but whenever the next check-up comes around, a small part of her worries that it could come back. That sucks.

On one hand, I think I'd be an ostrich about it. On the other hand, I think I'd be more pragmatic. And along those lines...because my Mom has had breast cancer and just that fact alone doubles my chances of getting it, I actually expect that I will get it too. Is that too negative? I mean, I hope I don't, but if I do it won't be a shock. Cancer sucks!

In or Out?

What is proper door etiquette?

I'm not talking about, should a man hold the door open for a woman? Yes, he should by the way. It's good manners. Plus, as a woman, I deserve some perks :-) that's a different discussion though

Here's an example of what I'm talking about...one day I went down to the cafeteria for lunch. There are 2 double doors and 2 single doors flanking them. All the doors are glass, like retail stores. If you're exiting the cafeteria you have to PUSH the doors open into the corridor. So, I'm leaving the cafeteria, with my lunch to-go, and I chose the single door on the far right (kinda like being in the far right lane on the road), there is a man on the other side of the door who wants to come in. First of all, there's 5 other doors he could have used. Anyway, I push the door open and he steps in front of me to come in, like I should squish myself next to door and let him come in before I go out. I just looked at him and said, "are you kidding me?" He backed off to let me out but he didn't offer to hold the door open. That really ticked me off. Then I noticed that that very situation happens a lot more frequently than you think. And when you come to a door at the same time as someone on the other side of the door, who should go in/out first? Who has the right of way? I think it's the person who has to PUSH the door, not PULL the door. And if you have to PULL the door, should you do so and let the other person/people through or just stand aside and wait until the PUSHer(s) are through? And if I'm the PULLer and the PUSHer is a male, should I hold the door for him? Or when he comes through, should he wait and hold the door open for me? And if there is more than a one door or one set of doors, do you get to use any old door? Or do the rules of the road apply? You know, left and right traffic.

It's a trivial thing I know, but life is filled with trivial things.

Marco Simoncelli

Marco Simoncelli was an Italian Moto GP motorcycle racer with a big crazy curly fro.

He died yesterday when he was involved in a wreck on the 2nd lap of the race. We watch all these races because the man is huge Moto GP fan. Well, we record all of them...some of them happen live in the middle of the night our time.

Anyway, it was pretty apparent seconds after the wreck, that he was dead. So so sad. But the reason I'm bringing this up is because of the lack of media attention. Not that he died, but that Moto GP, even when the race was red flagged and all the other riders were in the pits, waiting, never showed his lifeless body again. They showed part of the crash with the other riders, but they never showed Marco Simoncelli again. On the news yesterday, during the sports reviews, they spoke of Marco Simoncelli and the wreck, but there was no video.

I'd like to commend Moto GP for not releasing the video to be shown a hundred times.
When Indy car driver Dan Wheldon was killed in that crash, I'll bet there were a thousand opportunities to see the video. I don't know who has the rights to Moto GP broadcasting but I'm happy that they don't care soooo much about publicity and $$ that they are willing to forgo any sense of respect and what's right. Oh it's out there...on youtube and a couple other places, but it's not prevelant.

It's enough to know that the young man died.

One more time...

In other news...

Mattel says it's for collectors but...really? Com'on now;

A tattooed Barbie??? Ugh.

I'm glad Gadhafi is now rotting in hell but do I really need to see his dead body? Ick

Same for all those exotic animals that were gunned down. It was enough that you had to tell us but do we need to see their dead bodies? Gross. And people still wonder if we've become desensitized.

Remember Harold Camping? He's the old guy that predicted the rapture would occur on May 21st. It didn't. So he said he had his numbers wrong and it's actually going to be on October 21st. That's today. Are you still here? Me too.

And just for fun, have you seen the 2011 Holiday Book for Neiman Marcus?? I love that there's a catalog that you can actually buy a yacht out of!

My man

It's been almost an entire year since the big "C" diagnosis. Yesterday he had to go for the 3 month blood draw. Next week he'll get the results and have the big ONE YEAR check up. I thought he would be all freaked out about it but he seems to be handling it pretty well.

Also, he called me this morning to share a nice story with me. Apparently, his biggest tenant, a law firm, sent his boss, his boss's boss, and the regional boss an email praising MY hubby for his exemplary work/service. MY HUBBY? I don't mean about the work...he's a perfectionist when it comes to doing things...I just mean the customer service part, you know, his sunny disposition. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Bill? Mr. Grouchy Pants?
Go figure. He's in a super duper good mood now. Sweet!

I love country music

I wish Toby Keith didn't act like such an ass. I really like some of songs. I especially like his new one;

Made in America

My old man’s that old man,
Spent his life livin’ off the land,
Dirty hands, and a clean soul.
Breaks his heart seein’ foreign cars,
Filled with fuel that isn’t our
And wearin’ cotton he didn’t grow

Chorus
He’s got the red, white and blue flyin’ high on the farm
Semper fi tattooed on his left arm
Spends a little more at the store for a tag in the back that says U.S.A..
Won’t buy nothin’ that he can’t fix,
With wd40 and a craftsman wrench
He ain’t prejudice he’s just, made in America

His wife, she’s that wife
that decorates on the 4th of July
But says “every day’s independence day”
She’s golden rule, teaches school,
Some folks say it isn’t cool but she
says the pledge of allegiance anyway.

Chorus
He’s got the red, white and blue flyin’ high on the farm
Semper fi tattooed on his left arm
Spends a little more at the store for a tag in the back that says U.S.A.
Won’t buy nothin’ that he can’t fix,
With wd40 and a craftsman wrench
He ain’t prejudice he’s just, made in America

Born in the heartland, raised up a family
on King James and Uncle Sam

Chorus
He’s got the red, white and blue flyin’ high on the farm
Semper fi tattooed on his left arm
Spends a little more at the store for a tag in the back that says U.S.A.
Won’t buy nothin’ that he can’t fix,
With wd40 and a craftsman wrench
He ain’t prejudice he’s just, made in America
My old man’s that old man,
He’s made in America

transitions

I admit I'm not the most observant person in the world. Most little things about people just don't interest me that much. But truthfully, I do notice more than you'd think. For instance, it's funny to me how people hang on to summer. Today I've seen a lot of women still wearing their sandals/flip flops and sleeveless blouses. It's 45 degrees out. And it's raining. Yeah, yeah, we can see that you still have your summer tan but you can't actually be comfortable! At first I thought it was just young women, but it's not. These women will still be wearing their summer clothes until the first flakes fall. Maybe it's just because they love summer so much? Not me! I like summer but I'm always looking forward to the next season. I like the cooler weather of Autumn.

I'm throwing this little quote in because it made laugh;

"Ham and eggs - A day's work for a chicken; A lifetime commitment for a pig."

I found it while I was looking for today's ditty to write on my white board. What's that? You want to know what I did write on my board? OK, I'll tell you...
The average pencil is seven inches long with just a 1/2 inch eraser - in case you thought optimism was dead.
Good one isn't it?

yeah, that's a good idea...

On my drive in this morning, I noticed something new. A bike lane. A bike lane on a busy boulevard. A bike lane on a busy boulevard in the ghetto. You can tell that automobile drivers are already ticked off that the city took up a traffic lane to make a bike lane and a parking only lane. I'll let you know if I EVER see a bicyclist using the bike lane...in the ghetto. Did my tax money go towards the signage and creation of the bike lane in the ghetto? don't get me wrong, I'm all for the bike lanes if there is a need. But I live in the Midwest. NOBODY is going to be biking to work when it's below 32 or if there is snow/ice on the roads. I'm also going to go out on limb here and say, if you live in the ghetto you probably don't have a job downtown that you want to bike to. And if you do, you'll probably take the transit system. I'll reserve judgement of the ghetto bike lane for a couple months.

curling, twirling, twisting, turning

The quilled donations to the silent auction went pretty well. I was told that "Hope" would have been bid on more except no one had the heart to outbid the woman who had her name down ~ she is a breast cancer survivor. Awwwww

There was a man who kept updating his bid on Autumn, but in the end he lost. He wanted it because he named his daughter Autumn. I told him I would make him one for the price of the winning bid.

Two other people want me to make something for them too! Neat-O. This is so fun :-)

Plus there are tons of other things I want to quill. I can't wait to get started!

Gone away...

but I'm back now :-)

Bill and I took a 4 day weekend and headed to the Ozarks to visit family. We had a REALLY great time too! Even mister grouchy pants said, "I can't remember the last time I had so much fun" No really, he actually said that! Wow. You know me, I'm not an outdoorsy kind of gal but I have to admit that it was nice to be away from it all. No TV, no Internet, no radio, NO NEWS!  Yep, it was good. Plus, they can cook :-) And who wouldn't like to see this frequently;

It's entirely different from the flatlands that's for sure.

And look, here's my man being sociable!
That one was taken in a little town called Eureka Springs. Bill was very intrigued with the town. Not the touristy part of it but the town itself.

And here they are shootin'...bullets that is;

Again, who wouldn't love to sit out on their deck if it looked like that?
Thank heavens the chickens have enough sense to stay out of the way!

Parts of the Ozarks are a little backwards but even those parts have their charm.

Yep, it was a lovely couple of days and we are both looking forward to going again.

Monday, it was back to work for the man. I had the day off. I worked all day quilling though. I volunteered to donate a couple pieces of art work to the silent auction here at work. I had 4 I was working on but was only able to finish 3 of them;

I like all of them. I like that I like all of them! I may be sticking with this quilling for awhile!

Yesterday I was swamped at work! But today everything is back to normal...whew!
