Wednesday TV

I LOVE Jeff Probst. He's the best! I especially love his blogs after the latest episode of Survivor.
The best quote this week?

THE SHOWDOWN

I have been waiting for this moment. Ralph v Russell. They met in the forest. The human sweater and the angry gnome.

Ralph: Russell there wasn’t no hidden clue in there was there? You didn’t win it. We all won it.Russell: Calm down guys. This is how the game is played. You’re either with me or against me.

Man that Russell is something else. I can't even believe a woman married him let alone have his babies. Ick! hahahahaahahaha - I guess that was kinda mean :-)

And American Idol is getting close to the final 24 to make the show. I know I keep saying it but...love love love the new judges. I may actually have a crush on Steven Tyler. At the very least, I would like to just hang out with him! He's funny, passionate AND he seems like a genuinely nice guy. I can say all that freely because my man may have crush on J.Lo for the same reasons, plus a couple more.

whiners

When did we become a nation of whiners? Why do we put up with them? Seriously. Specifically I'm talking about the employed whiners of America. You get a paycheck to do a job. If you can't do that job, quit and move on. Don't blame it on your employer. When did employers start babying all the whiners? When exactly did they stop saying, "shut up or quit"? You would not believe the crap we put up with from employees.

My eye doctor says I'm sensitive to the light on my monitor and I need a shaded screen to put over it.
So go buy yourself one. Why is that your employers responsibility?

I have carpel tunnel and need one of those ergonomic keyboards for my PC.
Again, what's your point? Go buy your own.

The toilet paper in the restrooms is too harsh and causes chaffing. You have to put something softer in the stalls.
Are you kidding me???

It's too cold in this part of the building, can you get me a space heater?
No. Shut up. Dress warmer.

Why is it always so warm over here? Can't we turn the air down?
And make everyone else miserable because YOU have hot flashes? Bring in a fan ya moron.

I don't like my supervisor. Can Jane and I change groups so I can be under Sally instead?
No. But here's a change I think will work for all of us...you're fired.

I'm addicted to nicotine and need to take a break to feed my habit, every 60 minutes, for 10 minutes. Is that a problem?
Yes. Yes it is. Unless of course you plan to work an extra hour every day. Oh, you don't? Then I'm only going to pay you for 7 hours of work. Oh that's right, you're a union worker! Well you can go right ahead then - is there anything else I can do for you?

Do you know what it means to live in a "right to work" state? There are 22 states that have a right to work statute in place. Basically it means, if you are employed in one of the 22 states that has a Right to Work law, you cannot be required to join or pay dues or fees to a union. My state just passed a bill yesterday making this a Right to Work state. The Union has been protesting at the State House for 2 days now. Tough. Shame on them for being such bullies. There was a time/reason for Unions but that time has passed. hahahaha, that's a whole different rant though :-)

I've missed lots of things to talk about

I know this is really boring to some people but I LOVE the Westminster Dog Show. It was especially great last week because that little gremlin looking Pekinese didn't win. The BIG DOG won!!! In case you didn't see it;

He's a Scottish Deerhound named Hickory. The first of his breed to ever win at Westminster! Neat. Also, the artwork for Westminster was awesome this year;

It was a nice departure from the usual LeRoy Neiman looking stuff. The artists name is Amber Sena .

Next on the list is....SURVIVOR!!!!! Yesssssss. Boston Rob against Russell. Oh man, what could be better than that?! If the first show was any indication of this season is going to go...Survivor fans are ecstatic already!

I just finished the 2nd week of calorie counting...Booooooo. The first few days, it was really hard to meet the minimum. Then I got some Thin Mints :-) hahahahahahaha It's easier now, even without the cookies!

Oh! And it's that time of year again;
Only available at Easter time. Stock up now, they're the BEST!

Ahh love...

Happy Valentine's Day!

5% of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day.

73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine's Day are men, while only 27 percent are women.

About 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are exchanged each year. That's the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas.

About 3% of pet owners will give Valentine's Day gifts to their pets.

Approximately 110 million roses, the majority red, will be sold and delivered within a three-day time period.

Cupid, another symbol of Valentines Day, became associated with it because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards holding a bow and arrows because he is believed to use magical arrows to inspire feelings of love.

February 14, 270 A.D. : Roman Emperor Claudius II, dubbed "Claudius the Cruel," beheaded a priest named Valentine for performing marriage ceremonies. Claudius II had outlawed marriages when Roman men began refusing to go to war in order to stay with their wives.

Hallmark has over 1330 different cards specifically for Valentine's Day.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.

In the United States, 64 percent of men do not make plans in advance for a romantic Valentine's Day with their sweethearts.

It wasn't until 1537 that St. Valentine's Day was declared an official holiday. England's King Henry VIII declared February 14th a holiday.

Only the U.S., Canada, Mexico, France, Australia and the U.K. celebrate Valentine's Day.

Teachers will receive the most Valentine's Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, and then, sweethearts.

The first televised tour of the White House aired on February 14 in 1962. First Lady Jackie Kennedy hosted the tour.

The heart is the most common symbol of romantic love. Ancient cultures believed the human soul lived in the heart. Others thought it to be the source of emotion and intelligence. Some believed the heart embodied a man's truth, strength and nobility. The heart may be associated with love because the ancient Greeks believed it was the target of Eros, known as Cupid to the Romans. Anyone shot in the heart by one of Cupid's arrows would fall hopelessly in love. Because the heart is so closely linked to love, it's red colour is thought to be the most romantic.

The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife, who died in childbirth. Work on the Taj began in 1634 and continued for almost 22 years. required the labor of 20,000 workers from all over India and Central Asia.

It's a disposable world

Over the weekend, I went furniture shopping with my Mom. She's had her sofa for 15 years. It's about 5 years past its prime. But the fabric is still good and it's not totally falling apart. 15 years ago, she bought herself a new bedroom set, to replace the one she's had since I was just a tiny girl. The old bedroom set is now in the guest room. Anyway, she bought a new sofa AND a new dinning room set. The dinning room set she has now is a hand me down and she's had it for 33 years. Again, there isn't anything wrong with it. It's a quality piece of furniture. I think she struggled a little with getting something new. I told her it was okay to be tired of the same table and chairs after 33 years! And truthfully, she worked hard and scrimped and saved and made a lot of sacrifices just so she could be financially comfortable in her "golden years".

She also still has some cookware that she's had since the 60's. She might even still have an avocado green electric skillet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not making fun, just using her as an example of an old attitude,
"Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without." Do people do that anymore? Well, now they do, a little bit, because of the recession and being 'green'. The new attitude is, "reduce, reuse, recycle." But as a whole, we live in a disposable world. 50 years ago, if your tablecloth was old and thread bare, you turned it into an apron or dust cloths. Today, you feel like it's okay to toss it out or give it to Goodwill if you're just tired of it and you buy Swifers to dust with.

I've been guilty of that myself. I wanted new dishes just because I was tired of looking at the old ones after 8 years. There wasn't anything wrong with them though. A couple weeks ago we bought a new crock pot. The one we were using was a wedding gift, 22 years ago. It's not broken but I wanted one with some newer features. Since I've been married, I've purchased 5 different comforters for our bed. Again, not because we wore them out or used them up...I just got tired of them. In my head, they were disposable.

On the flip side however, it's not only the way you think. It's how things are made. Why does your PC crash after a couple years? Why do you need to replace your cell phone every couple years? Why do you buy a new car before the one you have is even paid for? Why do your kids have so many toys that will end up in the trash can before the year is out? Doesn't it seem like everything is disposable these days. Clothes, food that goes bad sitting in your fridge, Christmas tree lights, homes, new furniture that only lasts a few years, even your friends in some cases. How come the first vacuum cleaner I bought lasted decades but since it died I've had to replace it 3 times? How come there are still cars, built in the 50's on the road but the thought of a new Mustang still still being on the road 50 years from now is very silly?

I think I can do better. Can you?

weather humor

Thanks Mom!

The ice age...

is finally coming to an end. Woohoo!!

Not looking forward to the stinky, muddy paws but I'll live.

Tuesday night and alllll Wednesday, I had to go to a sleep disorder center. Wow was that weird. 16 wires hooked up to your head (next to your eyes, your jaw, your chin, throat and the rest on your head) plus a thingy that goes up your nose, wires on your chest and legs and stretchy belts around you chest and belly. Then they expect you to go to sleep! Uh huh, that's what I thought too. But surprisingly I slept pretty well. The room is kind of like a really basic motel room. I had a TV and my own thermostat. You know I turned it way down too! I wish I had remembered to bring my own pillow though. Isn't it funny how much you love your pillow?

Then, for most normal people, they send you home in the morning. Not me, nope. I had to do the all day study too. They unhooked everything but the 16 wires though so it was a little better. Every 2 hours they came in, turned off the lights and asked me to nap for 20 minutes. Uh huh, that's what I said too. But you know what? I fell asleep every time. I even fell asleep when I was supposed to be awake. The daytime test was to rule out narcolepsy. I'm not narcoleptic - just sleepy. That's what I'm telling myself :-) Good grief. Now I have to wait a couple weeks for the results. I do think it would be interesting to see my brain waves though.

I wonder what they look like when I'm sleeping? How often do I get to that Delta sleep? It'll be interesting.

I'm also on a weight management plan. Let me just say, counting calories sucks! So far this week, I only made my minimum twice. That's not good. It just goes against what you believe to be true...how can you eat MORE and loose weight? Today, however, I have the answer...Girl Scout cookies!!! Now, if I don't meet my minimum I'll just eat cookies! Yep, I can deal with that :-)

Do you watch American Idol? It's my guilty pleasure and I want to say it again, I LOVE THE NEW JUDGES! Steven Tyler is the best! I love that he's a real fan of music and he has the face of a child. Not in looks but in expressions. He has a very expressive face. I didn't know he was so silly and I love that he's just an old hippie with a 70's flair. So far this season I only have one gripe ~ they shouldn't have lowered the contestant age to 15. I know one year isn't a big difference but there is a big difference between 15 and 16 years old. I don't care how good they are, I wouldn't have let a 15 year participate. I think that's too young for such an ugly business. I know lots of folks wouldn't agree but I just couldn't bear to break a childs heart.

ENOUGH!

Even I've had enough now. GO AWAY WINTER! Good grief. I admit, I didn't watch much of the news the last couple days. Imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning and let the dogs out...to a ton of snow on the ground! When did that happen? So I logged on to weather bug and it says, 1 to 2 inches today (which we've already surpassed by at least 2 inches), 1 to 2 inches tomorrow and 3 inches on Monday. Ugh. I'm sad. Last I heard, it was supposed to get up to 35 tomorrow. I was looking forward to the ice melting. *sigh*

Look at this!!

BOOOOOOOOOO

Hooray for the groundhog!

If you live anywhere in the plains or the Midwest or the northeast or....hell, if you live anywhere that's not the west coast, yesterdays early spring prediction was fanTAStic! I took 2 snow days in a row! For us, it wasn't really the snow that got us but the ice. A couple inches of it ~ everywhere. For Carol, the weather queen, I'll describe it;

Going home Monday night there was freezing rain. That means that the surface temps are so cold when the rain hits, it freezes on contact. By the time I got home, my whole car, except where my wipers worked, had a 1/4 inch of ice on it. It's really weird watching it happen. It just seems so hard to imagine that liquid can freeze that quickly.

Tuesday, all that freezing rain on top of the couple inches of snow we already had, has turned everything on the ground into a solid block of 4 inch thick ice. Because it was also so windy while it was raining, the ice wraps around everything. Buildings, trees, sign posts, fences, bird feeders, etc. We also got more snow Wednesday. When the dogs ran out in the backyard Tuesday, they seemed to be a little confused about not sinking in the snow. It was kind of funny. Usually Pepper bounces around a lot but she seemed to know that if she tried that she would just slip and fall over. I went out to get the mail twice but didn't leave any footprints. It's a mess.

This morning on my drive in to work, the city is filled with tree debris. Twigs and branches everywhere. Our city fared better than most. We lost our power last night for a couple hours but that was it. The main streets are all car worthy but the secondary and neighborhood streets are a just a big ice skating playground. Schools are closed for the 3rd day in a row. But today it's because it was so cold this morning ~ sub zero wind chills. Brrrrrrr.

However, I do have to say, now that it's sunny out, everything is sooooo sparkly. Not just the ice, but the snow looks like it's covered with glitter. I LOVE that :-) Even Bill said he likes these kind of days because they make him think of me. The rest of the week is going to be bone chilling cold so the ice isn't going anywhere. At least with snow you can shovel it and blow it away. We walk very gingerly and don't get out unless we have to.

Com'on Spring!
